Guerneville Groove - March 2016 - Beth Rudometkin

Guerneville Groove - March 2016

by Beth Rudometkin

Hard to believe it is already March!  Spring is on the way and the blossoms are already showing on our fruit trees.  The local resorts are busy sprucing up their properties, Chris Brokate’s Garbage Patch Kids continue to haul off the abandoned trash, Russian Riverkeeper is working hard, keeping their Riverkeeper Park free of graffiti and our local Sheriff Deputies continue their efforts in making criminals uncomfortable in calling Guerneville their home!  Thank you all for your continued support of keeping our community a welcoming destination; it definitely “takes a village”!

As you are out and about, marveling at our surroundings and taking photos, please consider sharing those beautiful photos you capture with all of our neighbors.  Community First Credit Union will soon unveil its next-generation website and in doing so, will be adorning it with groovy, local photos.  Members who send in their best photos of the North Bay will be entered in a photo contest, with the chance to receive a cash prize, their photo credit on the website and a “Do Gooder” porcelain piggy bank!  Stop in and see Staci, Amanda or myself at your Credit Union for more information; corner of Main Street and Armstrong Woods Rd.

While we are on the subject of photography/film, be sure to check out the Rio Theatre’s Classic Film on the River series.  A special series of classic film will be shown at the historic theater in Monte Rio.  February’s film choice was Citizen Kane and a few of the future classics to be shown include The Wizard of Oz, Frankenstein, An American in Paris and The Maltese Falcon.  For more information, visit their website at

Speaking of historical landmarks, the Russian River Chamber of Commerce will be holding its March Mixer at the Guerneville Bank Club on Wednesday the 2nd, beginning at 6pm.  If you haven’t checked out the old bank (which has been vacant for the past 30 years) come see the new life that Bob Pullam has put into it!  While there, you can taste some of Nimble & Finn’s yummy pie and ice cream, and also enjoy the Russian River Historical Society’s display.

Friday the 4th is the First Friday Artwalk with T.D. Dixon’s reception at Coffee Bazaar being one of many artists who will be showing their work this Artwalk.  This particular show of paintings will consist of all new work done in the last year that has not been displayed in public until now! After you visit all of your local galleries and street merchants, be sure to visit the Guerneville Community Church for “Kit Sings Fats”, a musical tribute to Fats Waller, with Maple Profant, Piano & Darcy Reineir, Bass; there will be other groovy special guests in attendance as well, beginning at 7pm.  This performance is a benefit for the church and your support is appreciated.

Friday, March 25th is the 15th Annual Russian River Sisters Quinceanera, being held at the Rio Theatre this year!  Join Sister Scarlet Billows and more of the groovy Sisters for this grant awards ceremony, blessings and saintings; enjoy the live music by the Hubbub Club Marching Band and Miss Netty Machete.  I, Saint Spectacular Spirit, will see you there!

Something very groovy is coming to the lower Russian River this year……The Great Russian River Race is relocating from Healdsburg to Johnson’s Beach in Guerneville!  The lower river will provide an exciting new course and beautiful scenery as well….This is the 6th year of the race, building community engagement and raising money for Russian Riverkeeper’s educational programs that permanently reduce pollution!  You can help by sponsoring the race, participating as a racer, or just attend the party on May 21st .  On the beach you will enjoy live music, beer, food trucks and groovy costumes.  The race will begin in the vicinity of Odd Fellows Park and end at Johnson’s Beach.  For more entry or sponsorship information, visit the website at  Or come see me at Community First Credit Union to pick up your application.

Make it a groovy movin’ March everyone!
