Free Swimming Lessons for Children

Preventable Child Deaths

The Sebastopol Rotary Club is putting on its 32nd annual Learn to Swim Program for all Sebastopol area second graders at Ives Pool in Sebastopol. We really need volunteers to help teach the kids basic swim lessons and water safety. We talk about safe ocean, river, and lake swimming. You do not have to have experience teaching lessons, nor be a former competitive swimmer. We teach volunteers how to teach. You can help as little as a half hour twice a week for one month.

April 18 - May 12 ~ Learn to Swim Program

When Greg Jacobs worked in the Sonoma County District Attorney’s office, he was on a committee that reviewed all child deaths in the county every month. There were too many drownings from bathtubs, swimming pools, to the River. All preventable. Drowning is the second leading accidental cause of death for kids 14 and under, nationally and worldwide. And now pediatricians are recommending swim lessons for one-year-olds.

Joining the Sebastopol Rotary gave Greg the opportunity to become involved in a program that provides free swim lessons to Sebastopol area second grade children. Over 10,000 kids have received free swim lessons since the program began.

A former Red Cross swim instructor at Ives Pool, Greg is seeking volunteers who are willing to help Rotary with this mission that saves lives. We talk about safe ocean, river, and lake swimming. We teach volunteers how to teach. You can help as little as a half hour twice a week for one month. If you enjoy working with kids and want to help them be safe around water (pools, rivers, ocean – even bathtubs), please consider this time well spent.
