Bodega Bay Crab Fishermen Update

By Jim Kelly

Kudos to the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors.

On Wednesday, January 20, crab tests will have began again, weather permitting. Check the Gazette website for updates.

Meanwhile, the crabs from Washington and Oregon are making their way down to Sonoma County for our local fundraising crab feasts.

Also, many thanks to the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors for passing a motion giving our Crab boats at least one month of relief from their slip fees in Bodega Bay. (I’ll not beg for more… yet, but they’ll certainly appreciate, and need, a couple of more months.) By a unanimous vote, our supervisors stepped up and did the right thing. Great job, gals and guys. Everyone out there should give you individual thanks for your help with the fishing crisis.

Lori Cavanaugh from Spud Point Marina also gave the Gazette an update for the FOOD DRIVE to help the deck hands. “Food continues to come into Spud Point on a regular basis, which we are extremely thankful for and so are the fisherman.  Food can be brought to 1818 Westshore Rd, Bodega Bay (707) 875-3535.  I’m sure you have heard about the Safeway GIFT CARD program that Caryl Hart started. If that’s easier, please consider purchasing a Gift Card and sending that to the Marina. The citizens of Bodega Bay (and greater Sonoma County) have really come together to help a vital part of their community through a very difficult time.”

Meanwhile, back at the docks, Richard Ogg used his boat over the Christmas holidays, to locate and remove from the water 20 or so crab traps from Point Reyes to Gualala that became unhooked from their moorings up and down the coast and were endangering our whale migration. Nice work, Dick.

Anyone who wants to contribute to the ongoing relief effort to feed the families of our fishermen can go to Link to Regional Parks Foundation web site at sonomacountyparksfoundation.org.
