2016 Sonoma County Homeless Count Launches

2016 Sonoma County Homeless Count Launches

Over 150 Volunteers to Assist with Countywide Census

The Sonoma County Community Development Commission (SCCDC) is coordinating the 2016 Point-in-Time Homeless Count to tally the number of unsheltered homeless persons, including those in shelters and institutions, in all census tracts in the County. The Homeless Count will take place on the morning of Friday, January 29th.

“Knowing how many unsheltered persons live in Sonoma County allows us to access nearly $3.1 million in federal grants to fund critical programs to serve our homeless residents,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Efren Carrillo. “Thank you to the over 150 volunteers and homeless service providers who will help the homeless community access these much needed funds.”

Volunteer teams will canvass the streets on foot or by car, and tally the number of homeless persons in each area. Volunteers from County departments and private non-profit social service agencies, as well as dozens of concerned individuals and residents, will assist as site coordinators, team captains, and enumerators. Additionally, persons who are currently homeless will be provided a stipend to assist with this effort, providing the effort the benefit of their unique knowledge and experience to obtain information for the Homeless Count.

Data from the Homeless Count will be supplemented by a more thorough survey of approximately 600 homeless persons to be conducted over the following two weeks. Final results of the Homeless Count will be published in April 2016.
