Guerneville Groove - February 2016 - Beth Rudometkin

Guerneville Groove - February 2016

by Beth Rudometkin

Wow, what a month January was for our town! Nice to see the river flow and at the time of this writing, she was breathing pretty darn good!

Thank you to Chris Brokate, Clean River Alliance and the groovy Garbage Patch Kids for hauling away the tons of trash before the water rose. We all need to step up and volunteer on Monday’s for the continual trash pick- up, to help protect our precious waterways! Watch for additional clean up dates via Facebook or look for updated flyers at Community First Credit Union.

Have you checked out the groovy new salon in town? West Sonoma Style Bar is open for business on Third Street! Full haircare and make up service menu with all of the leading edge talent of the big city, only with a country feeling….check them out at or drop in and see the new groovy digs.

The First Friday Art Walk is February 5th, so be sure to check out ALL of the receptions and showings around town. There is a wonderful guide map available you should pick up from the Chamber of Commerce office, to help you find all of the groovy spots. I recently viewed one and there are a few places I wasn’t aware of, that turned out to be hidden treasures.

There is a lot happening at our Guerneville Regional Library in February! Saturday the 6th the Gravenstein Mandolin Ensemble will be playing their music from 2-3pm. This is the only mandolin orchestra in the North Bay, so check it out! Saturday the 20th the Puppet Art Theatre presents “Tale of the Dragon’s Tail” for those kiddos 3+ and then Saturday the 27th for the adults & teens only, is the Readers Theatre, “First Love”, “No Crime”, and “Eulogy” from 2-3pm. All events are FREE.

For those of you who enjoy the outdoors, training season has arrived with the Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods. Volunteer Orientations, Trainings & Community Education Seminar schedules are now available online at The fees for these seminars help cover the cost for the free environmental education programs offered to our school children, so your support is very much appreciated! Some of the seminars include guided strolls through Armstrong Redwoods, redwood ecology education, monitoring the harbor seals, exploring tides and learning about the abundant marine life along our coast. Groovy!

Be sure to show your love for our Russian River Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence at Open Heart Bingo on Saturday, February 13th! You can purchase your tickets online at their website Speaking of the ever loving Sisters, they are now accepting Grant Applications beginning February 11 with a deadline of Friday, March 11th at midnight. The Russian River Sisters organize and assist at many fundraising events throughout the year to raise the funds that go into the Grant Fund, and those monies are made available in grant form to local charitable groups and organizations that receive little, if any, government or mainstream funding.

If your organization is in the Sonoma County area, it may be eligible. The deadline for all applications is Friday, March 11th at Midnight. These grants will be awarded during the observance of the Sisters’ Anniversary celebration on Friday, March 25, 2016. This year they are celebrating their Quinceañera, fifteen years of promulgating universal joy, expiating stigmatic guilt and serving the under-served at the Russian River!

What a lovely way to wrap up this February! Remember, our community is a hate-free zone, so keep on groovin’ Guerneville.
