Noreen Evans Runs for 5th Dist. Supervisor

Noreen Evans Runs for 5th District Supervisor

I'm re-posting all the supervisor candidates essays so you can read them before you go vote ~ Vesta

I’m excited to announce I’m running for Sonoma County 5th District Supervisor. We need strong, effective, independent leadership to protect the public interest. Based on my long record of public service, you know I will listen to you and stand up for the issues important to our community.

The 5th District is large and diverse. From Roseland and Southwest Santa Rosa to Cazadero and Sea Ranch, from Sebastopol to the Lower Russian River to Bodega Bay and Jenner, our common challenges include homelessness, climate change, crumbling roads and infrastructure, income and wealth disparity, access to and cost of healthcare, access to mental health and emergency services, among many others.

I was proud to represent the 5th District for many years in the State Legislature. With your support, I was able to make a real difference. While in the State Assembly, I chaired the Joint Legislative Budget Committee, charged with balancing the state budget during the Great Recession. Governor Schwarzenegger moved to cut vital government services, including Healthy Families, TANF, breast cancer screening, and IHSS. I went toe-to-toe with the Terminator to stop him from balancing the budget on the backs of hard-working Californians.

When the state tried to close many of our local parks, I successfully fought to keep Fort Ross and Armstrong Redwoods open. Guerneville was hit hard by the recession and it would have been much worse if we had not kept Armstrong Redwoods open.

I prevented the state from charging entrance fees at our local state beaches by cutting the project funding. When the Governor eliminated funding for rural school buses, I fought to restore it so our kids could get to school. As a member of the Coastal Conservancy, I supported preservation of Jenner Headlands and improvement of the Coastal Trail, and the purchase of Preservation Ranch to prevent its development in rural Sonoma County.

During California’s foreclosure crisis, I took on the nation’s largest banks and wrote the Homeowners Bill of Rights. I obtained $10 million in funding for SMART to complete the rail line to Larkspur and build a passenger station at the Sonoma County airport. I supported creation of marine preserves off the Sonoma County coast, wrote legislation to protect North Coast crab and salmon fisheries, and blocked aerial spraying of pesticides to eradicate pests threatening local grape growers. I’ve supported urban growth boundaries, community separators, and local, sustainable, organic food systems. Throughout the years, we’ve made real progress. And I’m running for Supervisor now to continue the work we began together.

Sonoma County faces serious challenges and we need representatives we can trust, with experience and a proven track record. I won’t just talk about change, I’ll fight for it – and together we’ll make it happen.

Let’s get to work.
