North Coast Winds - October 2015 - Robin Joy

by Robin Joy Wellman

I love October. Change is everywhere around you. As we wake in the morning do we have once again warm weather or will rain be around the corner, do we have fog or crisp cool mornings, and will our flowers and tomatoes last just one more month? Please oh please! School sports are in full swing, school is a normal routine now, and our schedules have a calm before the seasonal storm of the holidays. Our wild animal friends are looking for a drop of water from any source available including our yards, as well as feeding on plants they would normally poo poo.  Our coastal lands and animals are, like us, waiting for change. But let’s all agree – life is good on our coast. Jenner is exploding with activity. How about a cup of really great coffee down at Café Aquatica, enjoying the outdoor views of many birds, seals, and other animals that call the Russian River home? With the kayak companies offering tours, kayaks, stand up paddle boards, with more places to choose from to eat with a very small town feel  - it is the place to hang. If you are heading to town (Santa Rosa) leave an hour early to enjoy the few new offerings of Jenner. Have breakfast at ‘The Eatery”.  The newest restaurant in Jenner, ‘The Russian House 2” is just across the bridge at Bridgehaven. I have had the pleasure of eating there a few times and hope to highlight them in the next month. They are serving Russian fare with a menu that changes each day. The restaurant has a great atmosphere of warmth and welcoming with views of the Russian River.

Speaking of rivers - Going up the coast another great event is the Gualala River Run October 17. The 10K, 5K Run and Fun Walk is an out-and-back course that follows the scenic Gualala River along a paved road through a majestic redwood forest. For more information or to register online go to the Action Network website at

Another great place for coffee is Trink’s in Gualala. Friendly is the key word – as well as plenty of space for sitting and relaxing. Treats baked daily, as well as a full breakfast menu, lunch menu and many dinner options. Gualala Arts is hosting many art openings. A few highlights are Rock Paintings, Reading the Landscape, Tantalizing Tables, Native Art Expo and more.  for more info.

I would like to give a shout out to Eric Wilder, Kashaya Pomo member who will be sharing Kashaya History October 1 at 7:00 PM. Eric is a wonderful presenter sharing personal stories and history. Not to be missed.  Please check the calendar for a full listing of events at Gualala Arts and other town events. The Gualala Rotary is having a fundraiser, ‘Taste of the North Coast’ which raises funds to support our local community. If you are turning ‘70’ this year don’t miss The Birthday Celebation of the year Sunday, October 4, 5 p.m. Other coastal retreats to visit is the Point Arena Lighthouseand also our very active Gualala Art Center. Check their web for the many art shows, musical performances, and other activities  Enjoy October. Enjoy the Change.
