Guerneville Groove - September 2015

by Beth Rudometkin

Guerneville lost one of our grooviest, local, “Old Timers” in August. We are all very saddened at the loss of Monte Kerr. Monte managed the local Safeway for 25 years and was a well respected man. He lived hard, played hard and loved even harder. He married a lovely, spitfire of a woman (Gladys) and together they raised her 5 children. He actually helped raise us all at some point in our lives, whether it was through work, friendship or just being there throughout our childhood and later, our adult lives. Monte always made you feel welcome, whether you were a stranger or long time aquaintance. He always brought out the bright side in life, no matter what the circumstance. My favorite memory of Monte was when I was losing my hair due to chemotherapy treatments. He insisted on making me one of his famous martini’s and while I sat and enjoyed it, he ever so delicately, shaved my head. He made me feel beautiful and loved and I will forever hold him dear to my heart. We extend our deepest sympathy to the Monte Kerr family, which we all have felt and one time or another, we were a part of! Rest in Peace, my friend.

So now let’s get to the groovy happenings of September around Guerneville! The First Friday Art Walk on Sept. 4th is going to be an event you won’t want to miss! The Blue Door and Sonoma County Pride are teaming up for a Community Public Art Fundraiser, beginning at 5pm at the Blue Door Gallery. Have you noticed the hanging “lollipop planters” on the block surrounding the gallery? This is a really groovy project for the kids and adults to get together and create art and at the same time, beautify our town! There will be food, live music and an open bar (no host). If you would like to help be a part of this project, come on out or feel free to make a donation. For more information, visit the website www.sonomacountypride.org.

We would like to welcome Guerneville Elementary’s New Superintendent, Dana Pedersen to our groovy community! Ms. Pedersen comes to us with administrative experience in smaller districts like ours, has been a teacher in the classroom, a Principal and Assistant Superintendent. In additon to her administrative credentials, she has a Masters in Education and BA in Mexican American Studies, both from Sonoma State. Ms. Pedersen lives in the West County and is bilingual in Spanish, in addition to having many other skills and interests. Please join the Board of Trustees in welcoming her to our district!

Rockin’ on the River continues on the Guerneville Plaza on Thursday, September 10th with Zepparella, a Powerhouse All Female Led Zeppelin Tribute! The music begins at 6:30, but do arrive early and visit the Thursday Night Farmers Market and enjoy your locally grown fruits and vegetables and of course the delicious breads from Raymond’s Bakery.

In closing, just a reminder that school is back in session, so let’s be aware of our youth out there traveling to and from school! Lots of little bicyclists and walkers out in the early morning hours, so be alert as you’re groovin’ down the road!
