North Coast Winds - August 2015

by Robin Joy Wellman

Aaahh! August! Such a quiet month for most of us! We push for summer, get into the middle of it, and then slow ourselves to a normal pace in August as we have all adjusted to the busyness. It is a time of fog, and then no fog at all, with warm days and no wind. Treasure those warm days by jumping into our Gualala River at the favorite swim holes, or enjoying a walk on the beach. People travel from all over the world to visit our beautiful coastline, the pristine river, the history, and the sweetness of the small town feel.

I have been writing for the Gazette for several years now and finally we are moving north into the Mendocino coast up to Point Arena with the Gazette distribution. Some of you might not be familiar with the Gazette so here are some stats. The Sonoma County Gazette is a free news magazine that discusses local politics, social issues, environment, education, families, health, pets, law, finance, and more with a full calendar of events. Over 34,000 copies of our print edition are distributed to almost 1,000 Sonoma County locations and now some Mendocino Coast (thanks to yours truly) locations reaching an estimated 130,000 readers monthly - in print and on-line. To place an ad or get your event on the general calendar call 707-887-0253 or e-mail vesta@sonic.net.

If you would like me to write about the event please add me to your email newsletter distribution and I will highlight it for you with your details. The Gazette is a fabulous outreach tool. If you would like me to highlight your place of business or organization please invite me to visit you, to taste your food, to see your place firsthand or to attend a special event. I highlight one business or organization each month. It could be you with a huge draw potential from not only our local community but the wider Sonoma County as well as our visitors to our coast that are now picking up the Gazette for this very information (we can’t keep the newsstands full, they are disappearing so fast).

This month I would like offer a shout out to all the people of this coastal community from Jenner to Point Arena and beyond who volunteer as firefighters, first aid providers, and search and rescue teams. I know many of you and you put in countless hours of training, out of pocket expenses to travel to trainings, gear, and gas all for the will of supporting your community. Thank you a million times for your care and passion to help out your fellow neighbor. When you see our support volunteers – please thank them. All of us are thinking about the high fire danger this year (I think every year is a high fire danger) with our drought. Please be super careful. We also have many travelers on the road that don’t know our roads. Please be patient with them. Don’t take the chance to pass. It is just not worth it.

For events on our coast visit the websites of these fine venues: Gualala Arts where they always have events on the calendar with fine art exhibits, excellent concerts, contests, the Lighthouse in Point Arena, and the Stornetta Lands with wonderful coastal walks and access. For a pretty complete listing of places to stay and eat visit the Redwood Coast Chamber of Commerce.  Think about joining our Chamber so they can support you in return.

Again, contact me if you have additions, questions, or ideas you want to share out with our readers. Send me your newsletters, or email me personally with a specific event. I look forward to expansion of our reader base with this great free paper. Blessings to you all.
