Shakespeare in the Santa Rosa Cannery presents Twelfth Night

Shakespeare in the Cannery presents Twelfth Night

By Shekeyna Black

Shakespeare in the Cannery is a community-based creative arts project in collaboration with Vacant Lot Productions and non-profit Arlene Francis Center for Spirit, Art and Politics that is a perfect event for family and friends to enjoy this summer. Last year, for the inaugural season, Shakespeare in the Cannery transformed the site of the former California Packing Company’s Plant No. 5 on 3rd Street in Santa Rosa’s historic Railroad Square into an innovative outdoor theater, complete with solar-powered stage lighting and a set that incorporates the remaining cannery walls into its creative design.

Shakespeare in the Cannery introduces the stellar cast of Twelfth Night, performing in the 2015 summer production. The star-crossed lovers from the 2014 season of Romeo and Juliet get a comedic respite in this new endeavor by Director, David Lear. Fans will enjoy seeing Carmen Mitchell as Viola and Kot Takahashi as Sebastian, playing twin siblings in this delightful comedy. The actors were exceptional as Romeo and Juliet in the famous tragedy as the audience was wooed by their forlorn love in the inaugural season. Lear explains, “This year we want the audience to leave laughing. Last year, they left sad when we did Romeo & Juliet.”

Twelfth Night features inter-twisting plots and subplots including Olivia (April Krautner) falling in love with Viola who is disguised as a young man, meanwhile Sebastian falls in love with Olivia. Secretly, Viola dons a male persona in order to work for Orsino (Jason Soares). Antonio, a sea captain, (David O’Connell), helps his friend Sebastian while they journey through the land of Illyria.

Veteran actor, Alan Kaplan joins the cast as Olivia’s pompous attendant, Malvolio. (Note: he embodied the role of the Friar in Shakespeare in the Cannery’s Romeo and Juliet.) An act of comedic revenge unfolds directed at Malvolio and plotted by the following characters: Sir Toby Belch (Clark Miller), Sir Andrew Aguecheek (Brian Abbott), Fabian (Chuck Starzenski), Maria (Saskia Baur), Faste (Brandon Wilson) and Feste, (Haley Bartels). Shakespeare in the Cannery’s ensemble for Twelfth Night, also includes, Cooper Bennett and Erin Gallway.

Twelfth Night opens July 10th and continues each weekend through August 15th on Friday and Saturday evenings. Showtime is at 7:00pm and patrons are invited to bring a picnic dinner before the show to enjoy while watching the sunset over the open-air stage. Gates open at 5:00pm and beverages will be available to purchase at the venue with proceeds to benefit non-profit Arlene Francis Center. Patrons should bring their own outdoor-style concert chairs and picnic blankets. Be sure to dress in layers because it tends to get cold after dusk. Shakespeare in the Cannery is the perfect way to “Vacation at Home” this summer!
