Farmers Market Education Program Supports Clean Eating Movement

Discover Market Fresh: Learn, Make, Share

By Kelly Smith

As the “clean eating” movement continues to gain momentum, Rohnert Park Sunday Farmers’ Market should be a popular summer destination for supporters of the healthy-eating trend, which revolves around minimally processed, nutrient-rich food. The Farmers Market Coalition is teaming with Jarden Consumer Solutions to bring an innovative food preservation program to farmers market goers this summer that will allow them to keep locally sourced produce, meats and cheeses fresh for months to come.

Discover Market Fresh: Learn, Make, Share food preservation education engages farmers market visitors by not only teaching them how to vacuum seal fresh food with FoodSaver® vacuum sealing systems, but by also providing an educational and rewarding community experience. Participants learn how to vacuum seal food and make favorite recipes so they may share the fun of food preservation with others and enjoy the tastes of summer and seasonal foods throughout the year. The program is celebrating its fifth year helping FMC members educate communities on the benefits of buying, storing and sharing locally grown and sourced food.

“It’s a win-win situation for farmers and consumers,” says Elizabeth Comiskey, FMC membership and outreach coordinator. “Our visitors can stock up on locally sourced produce, meats and cheeses to enjoy throughout the year while minimizing preservatives by vacuum-sealing their purchases; and our local farmers and economies are supported through these efforts.”

Discover Market Fresh: Learn, Make, Share food preservation education program is particularly timely as the “clean eating” movement gains new energy. The concept of clean eating began as a small grassroots effort in the 1960s and is making its way into mainstream society as an overall healthy approach to eating that seeks to lessen the number of stops from farm to fork.

Jarden Consumer Solutions, makers of FoodSaver® vacuum-sealing system supplied 30 FMC farmers market organizations with the materials needed to host instructional vacuum-sealing demonstrations for their local communities. The program spreads awareness of the benefits of food preservation for healthy, sustainable living, and provides tools to support farmers market experiential educational programs.
