Demonstration Garden at SRJC-Petaluma

What’s a Food Forest?

The Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) is an incredible resource in Petaluma, and is about to become even more so with the creation of the ‘Living Learning Lab’ garden. Daily Acts and the City of Petaluma are collaborating with students, school staff, and community volunteers to transform a water-thirsty section of lawn at the SRJC Petaluma Campus into a water-wise, edible demonstration garden.

Food ForestThis interactive ecological landscape, known as a ‘food forest’ because it uses edible plants to mimic a natural forest, will serve as a model of water conservation practices while providing food for students and food for thought. The Living Learning Lab will be a space for students to learn professional eco-landscaping skills, display sculpture installations, study ethnobotany, collaborate with classmates, and glean for the food bank on campus. While saving over 37,000 gallons of water per year, this home-scale garden will overflow with apples, figs, pomegranates, citrus, medicinal and culinary herbs, perennial kale, gorgeous pollinator flowers and an entire section of native plants of cultural importance.

On September 19th volunteers will install a “classroom” structure (a dome shaped arbor with benches), a beautiful array of water-wise and edible plants, and drip irrigation. Kids are more than welcome and snacks will be provided. Participants should register at dailyacts.org to receive free parking passes.
