Monte Rio Musings - July 2015

Monte Rio Musings - July 2015

Summer has arrived and half the year is gone already. Where has this year gone?

I’ll be writing Monte Rio Musings the next few months while Dave Hardy undergoes bone marrow transplant surgery in Stanford to finally rid himself of leukemia once and for all. Yoga classes are continuing at the Community Center while Kathleen cares for Dave. We all wish them both a speedy return home.

Monte Rio is coming into its own once again. Our businesses are doing well, activity is up, tourists are everywhere (did I miss low season this year?) and our hamlet is looking better than it has in years. This is due to people coming together and working to effect change for the better. People from different walks of life building community. It works. And while it is work, it is also fun and rewarding to see the results of the efforts. You also make new friends along the way.

Last month we had a successful Pride in the River. It was important to keep Pride in the River instead of holding it in the Santa Rosa corridor, and to do it well. By all accounts the efforts paid off. I had a great team that made it happen. Chief Baxman told me after the event, in Cuts on the Green in Northwood, that he was worried that I would hurt my shoulder. I said why? What are you talking about? He replied “by patting yourself on the back so much”. It’s interactions like this that make this small hamlet so great. You can’t help but smile.

July 4th weekend is upon us. Friday July 3rd will be Big Rocky Games for kids, followed at dusk by the Water Carnival Boat Parade (prizes for best entries), the Water Curtain, followed by the River’s best Fireworks. Big Rocky Games continue Saturday, and there will also be a BBQ Saturday afternoon at the Firehouse. The weekend events are sponsored by Monte Rio Chamber of Commerce, Monte Rio Rec & Park, and Monte Rio Volunteer Fire Department.

The 104th Annual Monte Rio Variety Show will be held Thursday July 23rd at the Monte Rio Amphitheater. BBQ starts at 4:30, pre-show at 7:00, and the show at 8:00. This is always a great evening. All proceeds from the show and barbeque go to benefit St. Catherine’s Church, the Monte Rio School Foundation, and the Monte Rio Fire Services Foundation. Visit for more information and tickets.

If you have any comments, suggestions, or announcements for next month’s column, or any ideas for improving our community please email me at

Until next month, see you at the Fireworks and the Variety Show!
