Sonoma Green Business Awards 2015 Recognize Businesses for Environmental Achievements

A varied group of Sonoma County businesses — including premium wineries, a diaper service, and a worm farm — were honored last week for their commitment to environmentally friendly practices at the annual Green Business Awards ceremony held May 14 at The Barlow in Sebastopol.

Last week’s ceremony showcased 41 Sonoma County businesses that qualified for the Green Business Award presented by Sonoma County Board of Supervisors Chair Susan Gorin. Over the past three years, the Sonoma Green Business Program has certified 163 businesses that met rigorous environmental standards established by the California Green Business Network.

“The businesses that were recognized join a growing group of agencies and organizations that have demonstrated that reducing waste and conserving resources are not only good for the environment, but are also good for a business’s bottom line,” said Supervisor Gorin. “On behalf of Sonoma County, we would like to thank all the certified Green Businesses for their ongoing commitment toward sustainability.”

Fifth District Supervisor Efren Carrillo noted that Sonoma County is a leader statewide in the environmental movement. “This group of local businesses is a testament to our community’s leadership and its support for responsible and sustainable business practices,” said Carrillo. “The success of the Sonoma Green Business Program shows that our local business owners are willing to take the steps that are needed to improve our environment and protect our climate, and that our community is willing to support them.”

Participants of the Sonoma Green Business Program are local agencies and organizations that operate in an environmentally friendly way that reduces waste, conserves resources, and prevents pollution. The program is operated through a partnership with local government agencies. Within the last year, businesses in the program reduced more than 3.75 million pounds of CO2 emissions conserved more than 2.5 million gallons of water.
