Prepare for an Early Fire Season

In light of the extreme drought conditions, we are asking residents to prepare early this year in creating a defensible space. Here is what you can do to protect your family, home and community:

• Maintain 100 feet of defensible space around all structures

• Clear all needles, leaves from roofs, eaves, and rain gutters

• Trim branches six feet from the ground

• Landscape with fire resistant/drought tolerant plants that require little water

• Remove branches away from roofs and 10 feet from the chimney

• Use trimming, mowing, and powered equipment before 10 am, and not on hot, windy days

• Keep woodpiles and flammable items at least 30 feet from the home

For more information on preparing for wildfires and creating a defensible space in Sonoma County, visit or CALFire’s

Bodega Volunteer Fire Department Provided site set up/clean up along with First Aid/Standby with Bodega Bay Fire Dept at the 42 Annual Bodega Bay Fisherman's Festival. It was a great weekend and lots of money was raised for 23 local non-profits in the Bodega Bay Area including our fire department. Check out for more information.

We have responded to 50 calls for service so far this year. We have a roster of 15 volunteers men/women who respond as needed to emergencies. We average a response time of 3.5 minutes.  Were able to do this with a 100% volunteer fire department. We have no tax base and operate on fundraisers, donations and dues. We do receive great Support from Sonoma County Department of Fire and Emergency Services where they provides us Training, Equipment, Fuel and Insurance. We ask that anyone who wants to support our department become a member for $50/year. Anyone can join. Please check out our website for a membership form.

Our next fundraiser is Sunday May 17th from 7:30-noon. Pancake Breakfast at McCaughey Hall 17184 Bodega Hwy. Downtown Bodega (Not Bodega Bay). Breakfast includes Pancakes, Eggs, Sausage, Milk/OJ. See you all there.

The vegetation is drying out and summer will be here before we know it. If you have any questions regarding defensible space around your home in Bodega please get a hold of us for a free home inspection. 707-876-9438.

Pancake Breakfast – Sunday, May 17

The 37th annual Graton Firefighters Association Pancake Breakfast is Sunday, May 17th. As you know, the Graton community has made our breakfast one of the biggest and best anywhere in Sonoma County. It is our one and only fundraiser to support the volunteers. Last year, over 1,500 people attend the breakfast... this may be a new record!  We will have Fire Engines, Police Cars, Ambulances, SWAT Tank, and Helicopters on display for the kids as well as other displays. Thank you to all of the people who have donated raffle prizes in the past; from wine to B&B gift certificates, lawn mowers to jewelry – we had over 200 winners last year.

If you live in our district, you should receive a Graton Fire flyer in your mailbox. The menu includes all you can eat pancakes, sausage (it was a huge hit the last four years), scrambled eggs, Manzana apple juice, orange juice, milk, hot chocolate, tea and coffee. Gluten-free pancakes and sugar-free syrup are available... just ask! Price is $5 adults and $3 kids. The pancake breakfast is from 7am to noon; avoid 9:00 to 10:30, because this is usually the busiest time. We have added more grills and a “pre-sale” line to try and keep up as well.  T-shirts and sweatshirts will be on sale at the breakfast. Address signs can be made “while-you-eat.” Donate at the Blood Mobile and we’ll buy your breakfast.  Hope to see you there!

The Firefighters' associations will be holding their annual pancake breakfasts this year on Sunday, June 7th at the Twin Hills Fire Station on Watertrough Rd. and Sunday, June 14th at the Hessel Fire Station on Hessel Rd. Please come out and support your local firefighters!
