Santa Rosa Snippets - May 2015

by Jo Anne Cohn

Santa Rosa is a happening place! In fact, if I’m looking for something to do, I just find a copy of the Gazette or go to the KZST home page and find out what’s happening around town. But sometimes I just don’t want to go alone and can’t seem to drag any of my friends along. It’s at those times that I wish I had a network of people to connect with.

One resource that we have at our fingertips is Meetup. Meetup is the world’s largest network of local groups. The reason that I bring this up is that I’m all about building community and getting together with our neighbors. Many people reminisce about the old days and complain about how technology is isolating us from others. I think Meetup is an example of how technology can be an instrument in bringing people together and building community.

Santa Rosa Meetups

I received an email from Sujata who has a Meetup group called Sonoma County Artists - Musicals, Movies, Music & Art. One of Sujata’s favorite things is to connect people and share information. Sujata was thinking that I could use Meetup to spread the word about the events that I am involved with.

I realized that Meetup itself is an awesome tool for building community and I’ve been remise about not including it, and similar on-line resources, as a way to help people connect in Santa Rosa. Sujata uses her Meetup group to connect anyone who loves movies, shows, music and the arts. I’ve used Meetup before to find fellow hikers as well as new business owners. I guess I never thought about using Meetup as a way to build community. Now that I do, I can see how easily it would be to become involved in all sorts of activities - anything from raw foodies to golfers to crafters to tarot readers to….well, you get the message. It seems like there is something for everyone. And, if you can’t find an existing group, you can start one of your own! Good luck connecting with people on-line. Let me know how it goes. I’d really like to hear your stories. For more information, visit meetup.com.

Blossoms, Bees & Barnyard Babies

On Saturday and Sunday, May 2nd and 3rd from 10am to 4pm, Sonoma County farmers will open their gates and barn doors to offer a behind-the scenes peek at life on the farm. All you need is transportation, a map of your route, a cooler to keep your purchases fresh and a sense of adventure. Take the weekend to explore Sonoma County’s vibrant agriculture community, experience life on the farm beyond the barnyard gates, meet your famers, vintners & artisan producers and enjoy the tastes, tours & demonstrations fresh from the source. For more information, visit farmtrails.org.

Day Under the Oaks

Don’t forget the Day Under the Oaks on Sunday, May 3rd from 10am-4pm at the Santa Rosa Junior College. Children will be introduced to the excitement of higher education, adults can learn new and compelling career paths and all can explore the college’s many academic, cultural and student life offerings. Find out about college classes (even register!), talk to wonderful faculty, caring counselors and staff members, get to know SRJC’s athletic programs and see smart technology library. Looking for drought tolerant plants?

Come support the Agriculture Vocational Education Program and buy drought tolerant plants at Jail Industries plant sale, Saturday, May 9th from 9am-noon. Not only can you learn how to start your own compost pile or worm compost pile, but you’ll also be able to find all of the Master Gardeners Sonoma Superstars which are VERY drought tolerant plants. While you are there, drop off your old plant containers and donate used books and magazine for the jail library. All plants are grown by inmates and 100% of sales revenues are used for the Agriculture Vocational Education program. Plenty of California naives, succulents and Sonoma Superstars to choose from. The sales is located at 2254 Ordinance Road @ Airport Boulevard. For more information, visit sonomacounty.ca.gov.
