Guerneville Groove - May 2015

Guerneville Groove - May 2015

by Beth Rudometkin

Fire HydrantsHave you seen the groovy paint jobs on our fire hydrants?! Thank you to Marti McWilliams and her volunteers and also Kevin Gilman, Sweetwater Springs Water District and our local Fire Dept. for allowing Marti and her crew to add some color to our neighborhoods and the downtown area!

Speaking of local art, this month’s First Friday Art Walk is May Day, May 1st. There will be updated brochures and maps available for your self-guided tour of the Artists and Receptions. Something new will be added: there will be a 21 restaurants map making contest! The idea is to create a colorful, groovy, uniquely expressive “easy to read” walking guide map for visitors. The contest starts May 1st and ends June 15th. The winner will receive a $100 gift certificate to one of the listed restaurants. Look for the Art Walk team in the yellow shirts for materials and more information.

Congratulations to the El Molino High School Band who won Best School Band and Best Drum Major at the Apple Blossom Parade! We are looking forward to their entertainment at the 69th Stumptown Daze Parade on May 16th at 3pm, downtown Guerneville, along with all of the other school bands who will be participating! This year’s parade theme is Summer of Love….of course, I must say, groovy! The parade starts at 3pm this year, as it will follow Santa Rosa’s Rose Parade. PLEASE do not park on Main Street before the parade, as we want all of the children to be able to actually see the parade. We want this parade to be the best ever, so go over to the Chamber Office and sign up to enter! The Firefighter’s BBQ will be held from 12:00 – 6 pm and there will be plenty of music and Arts & Crafts on display all over town, so plan on a full day of fun!

Saturday, May 2nd is the Grand Opening of The Guerneville Bank Club! (the old bank building on the corner of Main and Church). Check out the artist exhibits, the Russian River Historical Society and rumor has it, an ice cream vendor!

The Russian River Chamber of Commerce will be holding its monthly mixer at Maresca Money Management, located at 16120 Watson Road on Wednesday, May 6th. Come meet your new Board of Directors and enjoy some yummy treats and libations.

Sad news……we have lost our volunteer Town Street Cleaner, Anthony. Due to lack of affordable housing available to him, he has moved to Santa Rosa. So remember everyone: CLEAN YOUR OWN PATCH OF SPACE around town! It is up to all of us to pick up litter when we see it and drop it into the garbage cans on Main Street.  Anthony did a great job over the past years and will be truly missed. I hope we can find another groovy person who is able to provide such a great service!

Saturday, May 9th will be Oompah Loompah Bingo, at the Guerneville Vets Hall. Come join the Russian River Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence for a night of fundraising! Remember, this ain’t your Grandma’s bingo, so participants must be 18 or older!

The Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods have some really groovy seminars in May! Just to mention a few: The Legacy of Pond Farm Pottery, Sat May 2nd 1-4pm at the Volunteer Office at Armstrong Redwoods; Cultural History of the Lower Russian River at the Guerneville Vet’s Hall with John Schubert, Historian and Sat May 30th from 9am – 12:30pm meet at the Jenner Visitor Center to experience Harbor Seal Viewing by Kayak……this is going to be very groovy! For more information go to or stop by Community First Credit Union as we have all of the information available to you as well.

Summer is just around the corner! Looking forward to the opening of Johnson’s Beach to check out the changes that Dan and Nick have made! Please be sure to stop by and welcome them to our groovy town!
