Santa Rosa Snippets - April 2015

by Jo Anne Cohn

Want to get involved in our community?  Now is the time!  April is filled with dozens of community oriented activities.  Bring your neighbors, family and friends and join in the fun!

Sunflowers for Santa Rosa

A couple of years ago, I had this idea…Wouldn’t it be great to build community by planting sunflowers  in front of where we work, live and play?  This small idea blossomed into reality when I threw the idea out in a column in the Sonoma County Gazette and people responded. We received lots (and lots!) of sunflower seeds and distributed them throughout sunny Santa Rosa.

This year we will continue the tradition of distributing FREE sunflower seeds at the Earth Day Festival sponsored by the City of Santa Rosa on Saturday, April 18th from 12-4pm in Downtown Santa Rosa at Courthouse Square.

Join your neighbors in Santa Rosa for our 6th Annual Earth Day Festival Downtown. This fun, FREE, and family-friendly Festival is a great way to inspire awareness and build community through environmental protection. Get involved by learning about solutions to address drought, climate change, and other environmental concerns in our community.  And don’t forget to pick up your FREE sunflower seeds from Sunflowers for Santa Rosa while you are at the Earth Day Festival!

Spring Egg Hunt for Tots

Bring your tot with their basket to Howarth Park on Saturday, April 4th to hunt for surprises hidden in the lawn, visit or have their picture taken with the Bunny, pet baby farm animals and make a springtime craft. Proceeds from this event go to the Santa Rosa Recreation & Parks Scholarship Fund which allows families in need the opportunity to participate in recreational programming like summer camps and swim lessons.

Tickets are required for the Spring Egg Hunt for Tots.  You can resister at the City of Santa Rosa’s website or by calling 707-543-3737.  Cost is $6 per tot.  Be sure to not only call ahead to register, but to get information about the starting times which vary by the age of the children.

Cesar Chavez Health Fair

Be sure to stop by Lawrence Cook Middle School on Saturday, April 11th from 10am - 2pm for the FREE Cesar Chavez Health Fair.  What a great opportunity to participate in the  Glucose and Cholesterol testing, Eye Exams, Hearing Screenings and Fitness testing.  In addition, there will be live entertainment, the Cook Middle School drum line and games and activities for kids.  What a fun day to honor the life of Cesar Chavez by celebrating a healthy community!
