American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California - Awards Dinner May 3

One of Sonoma County’s signature events will take place Sunday, May 3, when the county chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California holds its annual Awards Celebration at a noon luncheon at the Flamingo Hotel in Santa Rosa.

American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California - Awards Dinner May 3 - John L BurrisJohn L. Burris, an Oakland-based civil rights attorney, will be the keynote speaker, talking about “Litigating Cases to Bring About Social Change.”

Elbert “Big Man” Howard, a founder of the Black Panther Party, and Carole Hyams-Howard, his partner in Sonoma County human-rights activism, will receive the 2015 Jack Green Civil Liberties Award. Sandy Espino-Valenciano, organizer with the North Bay Immigrant Youth Union and a student at Sonoma State University, will receive the Mario Savio Student Activist Award.

Lunch in the Ballroom of the Flamingo Conference Resort and Spa, 2777 Fourth St., Santa Rosa, 95405, will feature a choice of entrees. There will be a cash bar.

Cost of the lunch is $55 full price and $25 for low-income, students and children under 12. A limited number of free meals will be available for those unable to pay.
