“The Creation of a Thousand Forests is in One Acorn”

by Kathleen McCallum

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote,” The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn” That statement fits the environmental spirit that is growing as we launch our way into Earth Day 2015! Earth Day has become one of the most widely celebrated Environmental events across the globe. Currently it is celebrated in more than 192 countries each year. This year The Day on the Green at the Village is happening April 25 from 11a.m. - 4 p.m.  in Village Court at Montgomery Village Shopping Center in Santa Rosa.

In its 6th year, this FREE festival features a Juried Art Show and sale, innovative electric cars, great music, dance demonstrations and Green Businesses and environmental organizations that promote a natural lifestyle in balance with the planet. Some exciting additions this year will be the Southeast Greenway Campaign, the Sierra Club and LandPaths who benefit from all beverage proceeds at the festival.

The Jurors for this year’s Art Show are Retired Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey and her daughter Amy Critchett, Executive Producer of Bay Lights. Bay Lights is the largest Public Art installation in Northern CA. The Juried show awards over $1,500 in prizes awards.

Sam Sirdofsky - Secret Tree © 2014Monet once said, “I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers”.  Many of this year’s artists feel the same way. Our lifetime achievement recipient this year is Renaissance Woman Sam Sirdofsky whose career spans 63 years. Her Secret Tree painting (April Sonoma County Gazette Cover) is a perfect representation of Sam’s amazing career. Her illustrations placed her work in major periodicals, commercials, Rock Posters for the Doors and Quick Silver Messenger. She also illustrated Isaac Asimov only children’s book and several of her own that she authored. This multi talented woman even designed a Hippopotamus ride for Disney!

San Francisco’s Bronze Artist Kirk McGuire states, “I have always been obsessed with nature and the variety of amazing wildlife. It is my inspiration!” Artist James Dowlen’s Surreal Split Rock painting depicts a lonely boat adrift with oars waiting for no one. The mystical rock levitates inviting more questions than answers. Santa Rosa Photographer Bob Hart’s photograph Iceland Canyon gives its viewers a glimpse into what might be a heavenly scene. Geyserville’s Russian River Atelier Artists Linda Schroeter, Naomi Merino and Jay Blums will be sharing their amazing realistic paintings in the show too. Marino and Blums both taught Art at Angel Academy in Florence and Australian born Schroeter is a contemporary realist painter dedicated to the study and teachings of the traditional representational art form.

You won’t want to miss headliner Shana Morrison and her band Caledonia who take the stage at noon.  Shana, like her father Van has a wide range of styles from blues, jazz to rock. She is a favorite at festivals with her extremely upbeat show.

In the Kids Area, you’ll find crafts, face painting and hands on activities for children of all ages intended to educate, entertain and inspire in the spirit of the Earth Day.

Admission is FREE.
