Sebastopol Rotary seeks volunteers to teach children how to swim

Sebastopol Rotary seeks volunteers to teach children how to swim

Preventable Child Deaths

When Greg Jacobs worked in the Sonoma County District Attorney’s office, he was on a committee that reviewed all child deaths in the county every month. There were too many drownings from bathtubs, swimming pools, to the River.  All preventable. Drowning is the second leading accidental cause of death for kids 14 and under, nationally and worldwide. And now pediatricians are recommending swim lessons for one-year-olds.

Joining the Sebastopol Rotary gave Greg the opportunity to become involved in a program that provides FREE swim lessons to Sebastopol area second grade children. Over 9300 kids have received free swim lessons since the program began. They have over 360 kids coming this year for the lessons from eleven area schools.

A former Red Cross swim instructor at Ives Pool, Greg is seeking volunteers who are willing to help Rotary with this mission that saves lives. If you enjoy working with kids and want to help them be safe around water (pools, rivers, ocean – even bathtubs), please consider this time well spent. Volunteers are taught how to teach the kids. You do not have to know how to be a swim instructor! Greg can be reached at 823-7341 or"
