Jack's Oak - One Year Later - Jack London State Park, Glen Ellen

Jack's Oak - One Year Later
Jack London State Park, Glen Ellen

One year after a solemn ceremony to bid farewell to the almost 400 year old beloved oak tree outside Jack London’s cottage, the community will gather again around “Jack’s Oak,” which got a reprieve after further tests. Although the tree is nearing the end of its life, it still stands and continues to be a part of the life and story of Jack London State Historic Park.

On February 1 at 10 am, this special tree and all the trees that are such an integral part of the landscape, beauty and life of the Park, will be the focus of “Jack’s Oak”— One Year Later. A Celebration.

Breck Parkman, Senior State Archeologist for California State Parks will address the past and present life of “Jack’s Oak,” estimated to be over 400 years old. Looking ahead to the future of the tree, representatives from the Park’s neighbor Quarryhill Botanical Garden will plant the progeny from Jack’s Oak that has been nurtured at Quarryhill for a year from the seedling taken from last year’s ceremony.

The maturing seedling will be planted at the Park in picnic area 2, which boasts a view of “Jack’s Oak.” In the true spirit of the cycle of nature and renewal, the newly planted tree will grow to face where “Jack’s Oak” steadfastly stood for hundreds of years.

The celebration concludes with a slow ecological ramble through the park to appreciate all the other trees in Beauty Ranch led by Park Naturalist John Lynch.
