Sonoma County Continues to Show Generosity Through Children's Book Drive

In the past four years, United Way of the Wine Country has held a summer children’s book drive as a way to showcase the importance of literacy for children, especially during the months when school is out. This year, 5,359 books for all ages were collected from June 21 through September 10, the vast majority of which were high quality titles appropriate for children ranging in ages from toddler to young adult.

The Free Bookmobile of Sonoma County distributed the donated books as they were collected by drive partners at Exchange Bank branches. A special focus of the distribution routes was on children living in rural and low-income areas. Studies show low-income children who do not have access to books at home during the summer will lose the equivalent of two months of reading instruction compared to their middle and upper-income peers. Over time, this summer learning-loss contributes to a widening achievement gap. Thanks to the generosity of the local public, each child reached by the Free Bookmobile this summer was able to practice their reading skills with books they keep as long as they wish.

The Sonoma County Public Library Foundation (SCPLF), parent organization of the Free Bookmobile program, was heartened by the results of the book drive. “This is an amazing example of how organizations can come together for a common goal and achieve something great,” said Norma Doyle, SCPLF President. “United Way’s enthusiastic partnership with the Free Bookmobile enables the spread of the written word to the very doorsteps of those with little access to books in our large geographic county. In the process, literacy can blossom in every corner of the region, bringing both smiles and a literate future to our children.”

The Free Bookmobile of Sonoma County thanks the generous community, United Way of the Wine Country, and Exchange Bank for helping us promoting literacy and love of reading!
