Symbios Wins Green Roof Award
for Ellis Creek Water Recycling Facility

The 2013 Green Roof Awards of Excellence is won by SYMBIOS for the Living Roof Design & Installation on Ellis Creek Water Recycling Facility in Petaluma

By Kevin Falkerson

The living roof at the Ellis Creek Water Recycling Facility will be awarded the GRHC Award of Excellence for best industrial project category. The Green Roof for Healthy Cities Design Award stands as recognition and appreciation for outstanding examples of Living Roof Architecture and Green Roof initiatives across North America. SYMBIOS eco-tecture of Sebastopol is honored to be the recipient of this prestigious award. The ceremony will be held at the upcoming annual 2013 CitiesAlive Green Roof Conference in San Francisco.

The Ellis Creek Water Recycling Facility has two buildings that were designed with extensive living roofs that total approximately 12,174 square feet. The living roofs were incorporated into the facility’s design to demonstrate the viability of this green technology and promote environmental sustainability.

The living roofs are irrigated directly by utilizing the reclaimed tertiary treated wastewater from the facility’s operations - no potable water is used. In the western United States where seasonal drought is an annual event, this green roof project clearly demonstrates the appropriate use of this reclaimed water resource. The irrigation water keeps the vegetation active and productive which in turn maximizes the building performance benefits afforded by vegetative living roofs.

The Ellis Creek facility currently generates over 700 million gallons of treated or reclaimed water per year. Although the living roofs on the facility only use a small faction of this volume, the reclaimed water could theoretically support millions of square feet of green roofs.

The green roof can be viewed by the public from an educational interpretation walking trail located adjacent to the facility.
