Seniors--Come Out and Play Pickleball!

Seniors - Come Out and Play Pickleball!

By Tricia Hoffman

For those of you who aren’t quite ready to settle down into writing your memoirs, playing bingo, watercolor painting, joining a book club or playing scrabble, how about doing something that’s active, fun, social and challenging for your body and mind? Yes? Well come on out and try the sport of Pickleball with us! (And you don't even have to be Kosher!) Pickleball is spreading like wildflowers throughout Sonoma County.

It's a silly name for a great game! Pickleball is a combination of tennis, ping pong and badminton. If you've ever played any of these sports or racquetball, this game will fit you like a glove. We play doubles on tennis courts that have lines painted on them to designate our Pickleball court, which is the size of a badminton court. We use hard surfaced paddles and plastic perforated balls  (similar to wiffle balls).

If you want to get an idea of how the game is played,  just go to the (Pickleball) website and you can watch some videos or check it out on YouTube. We’ve just had some wonderful tournaments in the Senior Games during the month of June in Windsor and seniors came from all over California and even out of state to participate.

So, if you’d like to come and check us out (we’re a very social, welcoming and fun group by the way), here are some locations and times. We have extra paddles and balls, which we will gladly share with you and we’re happy to give you some lessons as well. And, it’s all free! What could be better?

Locations & Times:

In Santa Rosa at Finley Park tennis courts (off of College and Stony Point):  Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. For more information about the Santa Rosa or Windsor groups, you can contact Arlene Knudsen at

In Windsor at Hiram Lewis Park tennis courts (on Brooks Avenue South, just past the Windsor Middle School): Sunday mornings, 9 a.m. -11:30 a.m. and Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 5 p.m. to  7 p.m. (or until Norm gets hungry).

In Petaluma at Lucchessi Park tennis courts (off of N. McDowell, take E. Madison, then first left on Novak, tennis courts are on the right). This is a relatively new, small group that meets on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 9:30 a.m. and Saturday at 11.  You can contact Pat at for more information regarding this group.

At Oakmont in Santa Rosa. They are trying to get designated courts at the present time. Oakmonters play at the other locations mentioned above or at Wild Oak (for a fee).

So, if you’re 50 to 90, still have vim, vigor and vitality and would like to get a great workout as well as have a great time, come out and join us. We hope you’ll get as addicted to Pickleball as we all are! (By the way, we have Pickleball Anonymous meetings and sponsors for those who can’t stop themselves from playing all the time because they’re having way too much fun!…. Just kidding!)
