Strike! Dance! Rise! With V-Day Petaluma

V-Day Petaluma, hosted by Guided To Safety, announces their sixth annual lineup to raise awareness and funds to end violence against women and girls.  V-Day Petaluma, with support from various sponsors and volunteers, will host a series of events from February 1 thru March 3.

We Are Rising – an art show from February 1 thru March 3 at Worthy Of Love, 226 Petaluma Blvd North, Petaluma.  Curated by Sheridan Gold.  Local artists have contributed pieces that are a positive expression of women; their resiliency, their sensuality; an expression of what the V-Day movement means to them; why they are RISING; or artwork relating to women’s empowerment and prevention of violence against women and girls.  Artists Reception Saturday, February 9, 5:00pm – 8:00pm.

Until The Violence Stops – a screening of the of the award-winning documentary at La Dolce Vita Wine Bar, 151 Petaluma Boulevard South, in Downtown Petaluma on Sunday, February 3.  The screening begins at 6:30pm; tickets are $5 and are available at the door or via BrownPaperTickets.com.  The film shows women from Harlem to Ukiah, California; from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation to the Philippines and Kenya, uniting and courageously revealing their intimate and deeply painful experiences with abuse ranging from rape to female circumcision.  It’s a film about empowerment and the importance of dialogue in the healing process. A celebration of women reclaiming their bodies and lives, this moving documentary leaves us with hope that change can happen.

One Billion Rising: North Bay/Petaluma Rises - a community invitation to Walk Out, Strike, Dance, Rise Up and demand an end to the One Billion women on the planet who will be raped, beaten or sexually abused during their lifetime.  The day will begin with flash mobs around town followed by an indoor dance event held at Petaluma Community Center, 320 North McDowell Boulevard, on Thursday, February 14 from 3:00pm-9:00pm. Tickets are $12 in advance and at the door.  One Billion women violated is an atrocity; One Billion women dancing is a Revolution!

The Vagina Monologues – live benefit performances held at Rooster Run Event Center, 2301 East Washington Street, on February 28, March 1 and 2. Doors open at 7:00pm and shows begin at 8:00pm. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. The Vagina Monologues addresses women’s sexuality and the social stigma surrounding abuse and violence against women and girls. This year’s director is Jennifer March, a former cast member and a founder of Petaluma Readers Theater.
