Rio Nido Magic - February 2013

Rio Nido Magic
February 2013

Valentine’s Day:

Roughly one billion Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged every year.  Kids from ages 6-10 exchange more than 650 million cards with family, friends and teachers.  If going out to a special Valentine’s meal with your sweetie or special someone(s) make certain to get those reservations in early as many restaurants are booked solid on this love filled evening.  Symbols of Valentine’s Day are:  the Valentine heart, cupids, doves and ofcourse red roses. With the price of roses on this day, I’d say any pink or red flowers will do.  Its the thought that counts and what you can afford.  Although many people aren’t fond of colored carnations, I actually adore them....they are affordable and remind me of my childhood.  If opting not to make dinner reservations, how about baking a cake in the form of a heart or even breakfast.  I recall making strawberry pancakes shaped as hearts for my hubby one year and he loved them. Ofcourse getting up extra early on a work day and making them from scratch in the shape of hearts was a challenge, but seeing the smile on his face in the morning as he headed out to work was well worth it.  Have a happy love filled Valentine’s Day!

Parks and Recreation:

The Russian River Parks and Rec crew installed protective coverings over the Bruno Farnocchia Memorial Park citrus trees to aid in frost protection during the forecasted freeze warnings.  The majority of these citrus trees were planted a couple of years ago and four more were added to complete the grove along Rio Nido road.  This park has gone through a major visual upgrade this fall/winter with the help of Clearview Tree Service and the Russian River Park and Rec. crew removing dead and diseased overgrown bays, also trimming up the lower 1/3 of limbs of all trees surrounding the horseshoe pits, dog park and garden area.  They have also been performing the sorely needed vegetation maintenance along the creek from the north cross-over road, down to the tennis courts and are currently working on the area between the court and the firehouse. Many positive comments have been coming in from members of this community.

FRN Beautification Committee:

The Friends of Rio Nido (FRN) Beautification Committee met on  January 24th.  A discussion was held on a possible future summer Rio Nido cleanup and other community related beautification issues/projects. More positive news to come as winter winds down and spring approaches. A huge thanks to the members of the Beautification Committee for their diligence, love and respect for this tiny hamlet.

Moon River Marketplace:

The buzz is getting louder and the natives are getting restless.  The new “Moon River Marketplace” is causing a stir and excitement is filling the air in Rio Nido. On my recent visit to the Rio Nido Lodge I was pleasantly surprised and tears welled up in my eyes when I saw all the work and revitalization taking place in this historic old building. The attention to detail while maintaining the historic integrity was overwhelming. The ambience is wonderful. The Marketplace will serve as a coffee shop with an assortment of breakfast goodies (the good stuff) and an array of quality panini and healthy salads. The best news yet, instead of having to run into town, the Marketplace will also carry every day staples such as eggs, milk, cheese and other much needed items for the residents of this community.  The Moon River Marketplace is near completion and will be opening in the next several weeks.  Hours to start will be 7am to 2pm and will expand as the business begins to grow.  A warm thank you to Dennis Judd and Jennifer Ostrom for their vision.
