We are ringing in the New Year after the driest December in the last 100 years of local weather record keeping. Hopefully we will get the rain we desperately need – soon! We don’t want to even think about the “D” word! Between the dead and dying drought-stressed Pines and Firs and the Tan Bark Oak scourge Sudden Oak Death Syndrome, fire abatement crews have their hands full.

Rain! Precious rain! A blessing that fills our creeks & rivers and recharges the over-spent aquifers. The showers we have recently experienced are an indicator that our winter storm cycles are upon us, and that we can finally breathe a sigh of relief as our fire-fears are extinguished.

911 call boxes are currently being decommissioned along our remote North Coast Hwy 1. Although personal cell phone reception along our coastline is spotty at best and non-existent in most areas, for some reason the ‘powers that be’ have decided that the Public does not need the luxury of the emergency 911 call boxes.

The Russian River Confluence is a movement to bring people together to celebrate and protect the river that is the life of our communities”, states Adriane Garayalde RRC Coordinator. Bringing awareness that what each person does, whether at home or recreating on the river, can affect the water quality in the river is vital to river health. Trash is just one of the water quality issues plaguing the Russian River.   A healthy river provides water for our homes and businesses, a healthy agricultural economy, a place of recreation, thriving wildlife and fish, and economic vitality.

The bad news is we now have a party in power who wants more oil production and offshore drilling. The good news is that for the oil and gas industry to actually be able to drill off the California coast it will require a long process with a sizable amount of paperwork and public input. This gives us several steps we can take to slow and hopefully even prevent offshore oil drilling

Fall on the Coast; possibly the most beautiful time of all. With the mouth of the Russian River closed again, the Estuary is full to the brim. Postcard-perfect reflections of Jenner, Penny Island and the sea stacks fill our cameras. The fog has pulled off- shore and this small sea-side town is warm and inviting.
