After the conflagrations of last month, the rains have brought welcome relief to Sonoma County. In most places they were gentle enough to start to teach the baked earth how to receive moisture again instead of turning slopes into mudslides.

As I write this, a recent rain has cleared the air and the sky is blue. This was not typical for us for over a week as the “Wine Country Wildfires” raged.

Some vineyards nearby were harvesting early while wildfires farther north were raging. When I walked out under the branches of our Great Tree one morning, the air was filled with the unusual combination of the smell of smoke and grape must.

It’s getting closer to harvest time and the season of thanksgiving, and it seems to be appropriate to start this month’s column with a message of thanks to our local Fire Department here in Geyserville and to the other local agencies and departments which assisted in the protection of Geyserville and the Isis Oasis Sanctuary recently.

Since first coming to Geyserville as a visitor many years ago, I’ve been fascinated by the story of these mysterious sulphurous “geysers” somewhere beyond Geyser Peak and I yearned to see them, or at least what is left of them.
