Some vineyards nearby were harvesting early while wildfires farther north were raging. When I walked out under the branches of our Great Tree one morning, the air was filled with the unusual combination of the smell of smoke and grape must.

It’s getting closer to harvest time and the season of thanksgiving, and it seems to be appropriate to start this month’s column with a message of thanks to our local Fire Department here in Geyserville and to the other local agencies and departments which assisted in the protection of Geyserville and the Isis Oasis Sanctuary recently.

As I write this, we are facing our first truly hot weekend – it’s expected to hit at least 101 degrees Fahrenheit today and 104 tomorrow – and that’s with me ignoring another weather service saying the high could be 107.

We’ve been dancing through the seasons here in Geyserville – a few days of summer-hot weather, followed by a day of drizzle and unseasonably cold temperatures reminiscent of fall or early winter, then into weather that feels like early spring. One day we are breaking out the fans and the next turning back on the heat! But with the advent of June we are hoping that summer is here in earnest as we welcome the sun.
