Santa Rosa Snippets by Elaine B. Holtz - May 2017

It is so important to vote in local elections. I believe with money interests having so much influence in our elections it is necessary to evaluate what comes in the mail and important to ask ourselves , whose interests they are serving.

Measure C - Rent Stabilization

The SR City Council adopted such an ordinance (“the Ordinance”). Certain residents of the City challenged the Ordinance through a referendum petition. The City Council has placed a measure on the ballot asking voters whether to approve the Ordinance. The Ordinance will not go into effect unless a majority of those voting on the measure vote “yes.” For complete information go here.

Measure D - Cannabis Business Tax

According to SR Mayor, “Measure D will allow SR to impose a tax on medical and recreational cannabis businesses operating within the City now that the State has enacted the Medical Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act, and the voters have approved Proposition 64, the Adult Use of Marijuana Act. Measure D will ensure that the City has the resources to properly support and regulate the cannabis industry without hurting our investment The measure states, “All of the proceeds from the tax imposed y this Chapter shall be placed in the City’s general fund and used for general governmental purposes:” in core city services, such as maintaining neighborhood infrastructure and public safety.” There is no rebuttal against this measure which is concerning to me.

SRJC Releases New Class Schedule Planning Tool for Students

SR Junior College (SRJC) recently announced a new schedule planning tool called the Schedule Planner. The online tool will allow students to create and compare multiple class schedules for a given semester, based on course preferences as well as other commitments such as work, sports, or family schedules.

The SRJC Schedule Planner will generate every possible schedule for students, maximizing their course selections and keeping them on track toward their graduations. Students can compare up to four schedules. After selecting their preferred schedules, students can use it as a reference when they register for classes in the SRJC student portal.

Students are encouraged to start using Schedule Planner to plan for the summer 2017 semester, which starts June 19. A link to Schedule Planner is available now on SRJC’s Schedule of Classes. The planner also can be accessed within the SRJC student portal. Tutorials on how to use the Schedule Planner are here. Contact: Freyja Pereira

This event is organized by Sonoma County Matsuri and partially funded through the City of SR’s Community Promotions Funding. The festival will take place on May 7 from 11-5pm at Juilliard Park and theSOFA Arts District of Downtown SR.

Something to think about

“You can no more win a war than you can win an earthquake.” And, “The work of educating the world to peace is the woman’s job, because men have a natural fear of being classed as cowards if they oppose war.” Jeanette Rankin, (1880-1973) First woman to enter U.S. House of Representative in 1917. Lost her seat in Congress when she voted against entry in WWI.
