Rio Nido Magic by Elena Chronis - August 2017

Back to School

Well, summer is about to end for many students going back to school the second week of August. It seems we wait all year round for summer to arrive for such a short time. Back to school commercials and sales are in full force. I believe kids should go back to school after the Labor Day holiday but with all the time off kids have during the school year it seems that the best time of year is cut short...personally, it doesn’t affect me because FALL is my favorite time of year. .

Heatwave

This summer’s weather has been wild. Its hard to believe it was 107 degrees in Rio Nido with most days in the high nineties. We are lucky to be under the redwoods. It’s extremely important to stay hydrated when the weather hits the triple digits. Be sure to make certain your pets have plenty of water and a cool place to rest. Pets can get heatstroke just like humans.

Homeowner’s Events

The July 1st BBQ was a fun filled event. A great crowd and lots of laughs. The next RNHOA events are as follows: RNHOA Golf Tourney, Saturday, August 5 at Northwood 9am-12 noon; Pancake/Art Festival, Sunday, August 6, (usual spot); 9:30-2pm. Labor Day BBQ, Sunday, Sept 3, 4pm-9pm.

Rio Nido Post Office

FRN and the HOA have filed an appeal to re-open our post office. We are anxiously awaiting the outcome. We feel confident that a resolution to this unjust situation is forthcoming. In the meantime, we are forced to go to Guerneville to pick up our mail. Stay tuned for more info on this hot topic.

Rio Nido Lodge

The Lodge has a new Innkeeper......I will have met him by the time this column comes out. I will be meeting with the Owners of the Lodge to brainstorm some ideas on what we can do to make the Lodge’s Coffee shop a great resource for our Community. Stay tuned for more info.......how exciting!

Celebrity Status

Who knew? Those of us who reside in Rio Nido know its a place like no other......guess the secret is out and we are becoming famous!

A TeraFlex Jeep commercial was filmed in our little Village showing our RN sign and spots in the forest and on the beach.....if you would like to view it go to YOUTUBE and type in: TeraFlex: Wanderlust/Rio Nido.......its Tres Cool!

Abandoned Vehicles

People have been asking where to call to have abandoned/suspicious vehicles removed. First off you can call the CHP. The number to call is: 707-551-4100. You should also call Vehicle Abatement at: 707-565-7395 and leave a message with make, model and color of car as well as license or VIN number. The CHP and Sheriffs have been “jimmy on the spot” lately and you can see them patrolling and doing their job here in RN. A big thanks to law enforcement.

Pet of the Month

Lawin is a Philippine breed known as Askal. Basically a street dog. Strays are often used as a main ingredient for a local delicacy. I met him during a scary typhoon vacationing at a beach resort. I decided to clean him up, feed him and then I fell in love with him. I jumped through many hoops to get him to the states by passing him off as a Chihuahua/Jack Russel mix. His name Lawin is Tagalog for Hawk. Let’s give him a warm RN Welcome.
