North Coast Winds by Robin Joy Wellman - June 2017

Summer is here! Heat waves and then fog fog fog! I love the pattern with the cool evenings in our hillsides, with fog coming and going throughout the day on the coast reaching into the areas that are heat stricken, always dependable. Mornings or later evenings are a great time for a walk in our warmer hills and if you are so lucky to live on the coast then anytime is a good time for a stroll.

The Gualala Art Center is a mainstay on our coast for wonderful artsy events, musical programming, classes, and supportive community functions. I want to give a ‘shout out’ to David Sus Susella; of course all of us know him by Sus. My past work with Fort Ross created many events that offered much insight into our local history. I could always turn to Sus for successful and quality partnerships where we both contributed work and outreach bringing history alive for our communities. Gualala Arts would not be the same without him. He is a YES man – and loves his work – and loves to share his passion. Thank you Sus for years of service to our community! The staff at GAC is amazing too. What a team!!! Over Memorial weekend a Community Arts Festival will be held there celebrating our local artists. The first Friday in June is the start of local Karaoke night on June 2nd. What better way to witness your friends at their finest – who knew Johnny could sing! June 3 is a fundraiser for GAC with a four course fresh tuna themed dinner. This is a must for our locals! Several art shows and other musical events will take place in June. Visit the web at gualalaarts.org/category/events/.

Further north in Point Arena are several great events in June including the 18th as the Point Arena Lecture Series continues with Lauren Sinnott speaking about her artwork styles. Visit them at pointarenalighthouse.com. If you need a place to stay, even if you are local and would like to have a nice Father’s Day get away, birthday or anniversary treat visit their new luxury lodging vacation rentals. The Assistant Keeper’s House 4 has had a complete upgrade and is quite the showplace on the coast. And more in Point Arena with the local art group offer exhibits throughout the year.

I was asked to share a ‘finraiser’ event held at the West Sonoma Inn and Spa on June 25th, benefitting Fife Creek and hosted by the local mermaids and caretakers of Fife Creek. Live music and free mermaid approved wine, an auction, and mermaid swimming with the public in the pool, (although be careful with the free wine and swimming with mermaids). A tour of the creek will also take place. Call the ‘shell’ at 707-484-8767 for more info from Vira.

Lots of good in life with so much to be thankful for so please count your blessings each and every day! Acts of random kindness are always to a good thing. Wishing you all good things.
