KBBF is Covering Your Community

KBBF is rising to the challenge to navigate audiences through these difficult political times. As part of the station’s goal to connect with the community and represent it well, Alicia Sánchez, Andre Andrus, Alan Bloom attended the National Federation of Community Broadcasters (NFCB)conference in Denver in July. This is a key conference for community radio stations. Sanchez observed, “It energizes us and makes us feel like we are not alone in fulfilling our mission statement.” There were intensives on Covering Your Community and Making Your Music Station Sing, as well as sessions dedicated to fundraising, volunteer relations, utilizing data, podcasting, and governance. Writer and filmmaker Denise Soler Cox delivered the opening keynote address, “Changing the Conversation: How Community Media Meets the New American Majority.” Her documentary, Being Eñye, addresses the growing Latino majority and its pursuit of both the American Dream and having representation in the United States. In her speech, Soler Cox shared ways to approach today’s audiences and attract new listeners, volunteers, and donors to keep community media thriving. Jenni Monet presented another keynote address. She was the journalist to follow at Standing Rock, using multiple resources to break news, including Facebook Live. Her speech, “How Nonprofit Journalism Meets the Challenge: Lessons from Standing Rock,” got audiences up close and personal with her reporting style. She also described her vision for nonprofit journalism and emphasized the dire need for freedom of the press now, when the media is under attack.

Listen Live Online KBBF’s updated website is now up and running at kbbf.org/. The Listen Live link allows you to stream the station’s programming.

Board Meeting Schedule During the summer, the KBBF Board Meeting Schedule has changed. Currently, the Bilingual Broadcasting Foundation and KBBF meet the third Thursday of the month at 6:30pm. There are meetings August 17th and September 21st. Then, the regular meeting schedule resumes. All meetings are open to the public. They take place at the station, at 1700 Corby Avenue, Suite B, in Santa Rosa.

Celebración del Arte On July 29th, KBBF hosted the ARTStravaganza. Local artists led creative projects for families and community organizations were on site to share information.

Sheriff Announces Early Retirement The Community Action Coalition of Sonoma County (CAC) has been supporting the Recall Sheriff Freitas campaign, gathering signatures on a petition calling for him to step down. Effective August 1st, Freitas is no longer the Sherriff of Sonoma County. Find out more about the CAC’s work at the group’s Facebook page at facebook.com/actioncoalitionofsonomacounty/.

Imagine a World Beyond Borders “How can a nation of immigrants declare war on immigration? The answer: FEAR!” This is the gripping theme of SF Mime troupe’s 58th annual play, “Walls.” In this timely piece, an ICE agent instills fear in the hearts of immigrants from around the world. However, it quickly becomes apparent that the people she confronts are not the “bad hombres” some make them out to be. As the drama unfolds, audiences are faced with a question: Can someone leave part of themselves behind without losing their mind?

Fans often travel to San Francisco or the East Bay to take in the performers’ unique brand of satire (which, by the way, has dialogue). However, the Petaluma Progressive Festival has welcomed them to the North Bay, at their location in Walnut Park, at South and D streets. The performance is one day only, August 6th, preceded by music. Confirm the show time and find out more at: sfmt.org/schedule/index.php.
