Russian River Estuary outlet channel 7-18-17

Jenner Estuary Outlet Channel created to maintain salmon habitat

Jul 18, 2017

Share:

On July 17, the Water Agency implemented an outlet channel on the beach at Goat Rock State Park. The goal of the outlet channel is to enhance habitat for federally listed juvenile salmon and minimizing flood risks by keeping freshwater levels in the estuary while allowing river water to flow out of the estuary and prevent ocean water from entering.

As you can see by the series of photos below, that after the outlet channel was completed, the beach berm eroded.   It can be seen from the photo taken today (July 18) that the inlet has reformed similar to channel conditions a few days prior to the closure on July 5. As always, the Water Agency monitored harbor seals and other pinnipeds before, during, and after the beach management activity.
