2017 Sonoma County Spelling Bee Competition Champions

Elementary Bee

Twenty students competed in the 2017 Sonoma County Elementary Spelling Competition held on Monday, April 3, at the Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE). This annual event brings the county’s best fourth, fifth, and sixth-grade spellers together in a competition designed to promote and acknowledge exemplary student achievement. These students previously won school and regional spelling competitions, which made them eligible to compete for the title of county spelling champion.

Nazia Quadir, a sixth-grader from Sonoma Mountain Charter School in Petaluma, won first in the competition. Second place went to sixth-grader Andrew Prasetya, who attends Meadow Elementary School in Petaluma. Third place went to Paul Koo, a fifth-grader at Gravenstein Elementary in Sebastopol. Roshni Dave, a sixth-grader at Hidden Valley School in Santa Rosa, took fourth place.

 2017 Sonoma County Spelling Bee Competition Top Four Elementary Champions

All spellers received a certificate of accomplishment, participation ribbon, and a souvenir. The four top-place spellers received trophies to mark their achievement. First and second place winners are eligible to advance to the 2017 California State Elementary Spelling Championship, which will be held in Stockton on Saturday, May 13.

Junior High Bee

Thirty-seven students competed in the 2017 Sonoma County Junior High Spelling Competition held on Tuesday, April 4, at the Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE). This annual event brings the county’s best seventh, eighth, and ninth grade spellers together in a competition designed to promote and acknowledge exemplary student achievement. These students previously won their school competition, which made them eligible to compete for the title of county spelling champion.

Krystal Luong, a seventh-grader from Rincon Valley Middle School in Santa Rosa, won first in the competition. Second place went to eighth-grader Sienna Morell-Grant, who attends Hillcrest Middle School in Sebastopol. Third place went to Sam Leitch, an eighth-grader at Rincon Valley Middle. Fourth place went to Trevor Love, an eighth-grader at Washington School in Cloverdale.

All spellers received a certificate of accomplishment, participation ribbon, and a souvenir. The four top-place spellers received trophies to mark their achievement. First and second place winners are eligible to advance to the 2016 California State Junior High Spelling Championship, which will be held on Saturday, May 6, in San Rafael.
