The County of Sonoma is pleased to announce that its Property Tax e-Billing System is now live. By enrolling, taxpayers will receive a tax bill via email. The Auditor-Controller-Treasurer-Tax Collector’s office invites all interested taxpayers to sign up this service at www.sonoma-county.org/acttc. Taxpayers enrolled by September 1 will receive an e-Bill for their secured property tax payments due December 11, 2017, and April 10, 2018.

On the last day of July, Occupy Sonoma County hosted a gathering of local climate change activists at the Peace & Justice Center. The purpose of this summit was to introduce ourselves and our various climate change campaigns to one another. Over 70 people, representing 25 different organizations, attended. Climate change activism is alive and well in Sonoma County.

This theatre critic took on that risk and attended the opening night performance of the  6th Street Playhouse production of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. The Russian River Confluence is a movement to bring people together to celebrate and protect the river that is the life of our communities”, states Adriane Garayalde RRC Coordinator. Bringing awareness that what each person does, whether at home or recreating on the river, can affect the water quality in the river is vital to river health. Trash is just one of the water quality issues plaguing the Russian River.   A healthy river provides water for our homes and businesses, a healthy agricultural economy, a place of recreation, thriving wildlife and fish, and economic vitality.

The bad news is we now have a party in power who wants more oil production and offshore drilling. The good news is that for the oil and gas industry to actually be able to drill off the California coast it will require a long process with a sizable amount of paperwork and public input. “This bill would almost certainly remove coverage from those who gained access through the Medi-Cal Expansion in 2014, and make access more difficult for those remaining on Medi-Cal,” said Elizabeth Gibboney, CEO of PHC. “This is a no-win situation. As part of its response to California’s tree mortality crisis, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) will conduct aerial patrols in Sonoma and Mendocino Counties starting today, Tuesday, September 19, through the 22, to identify dead trees that could pose a wildfire or other public safety risk. “Even with the abundant rain this winter, five years of drought in California have caused millions of trees to die or become structurally compromised. That’s why we are taking extraordinary measures to help keep the communities we serve safe,” said Kamran Rasheed, manager, PG&E vegetation management.

First off SMART has finally arrived. Anyone that has ridden the train is impressed. The views and the comfort are great, plus there’s food, beer, wine, and wifi. Maybe not the fastest way to get to the City, but it’s good to know that one Clipper Card can get you on a bus in Monte Rio, on a SMART train in Railroad Square, on a Ferry in Larkspur, and then you are in downtown San Francisco.

On August 10th, firefighters from Bodega, CAL FIRE, Gold Ridge, Graton, Occidental, and Sebastopol participated in a comprehensive wildland firefighting exercise. Thanks to the Trappe Ranch for letting us practice on their land, we were able to train on many of the tasks we face during wildland fire.

Sonoma County residents have an historic opportunity to address two of America’s most critical 21st century issues: one is soaring economic inequality and the explosion of low-wage jobs paying less than $15 an hour; the other is global warming and the imperative to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions by ending our reliance on fossil fuel. California communities have addressed both crises with “good jobs and zero waste” policies.
