“No time to talk about climate change?” If not now, when? The last few months have been a time of “global weirding,” as more and more extreme weather events occur.

For years we spoke of “global warming,” which, while it’s the true cause of “climate change,” is subject to deniers saying such things as, “but it’s really cold outside, how can the planet be warming?”

With this slogan, on June 1st, the President announced the US’s withdrawal from the 2015 Paris Accords on Climate Change.Mayor Bill Pedutoof Pittsburgh shot back, “Pittsburgh stands with the world and will follow the Paris agreement…for our people, our economy and future.” Climate change makes forest fires, flooding, and sea level rise more likely. As the planet continues to heat up, we’ll see more forest fires, such as the devastating one that recently killed at least 60 people in Portugal; in Northern California we’ll see fires more often, and they’ll be worse.

Staycations equal lower carbon footprints. Staying home, enjoying Sonoma County is great, but if you opt to travel, check your carbon footprint. Surprisingly, for a family vacation, flying is actually less carbon intensive than driving. But if you fly, go non-stop to lower your footprint. Counteract your carbon use by buying carbon offsets. I offset mine through Sonoma County’s Center for Climate Protection (CCP).
