Say it with Flowers

There was a time when fresh flowers  arranged in a bouquet on the dining room table was a sign of class and style…a gardener living in the house…a person of refined decor…the loveliness and natural beauty in blossoms, carefully chosen and arranged in a vessel.  Even in these hurried times, when there’s a knock at the door  with a flower delivery, the recipient gets a rush of acknowledgment that  s/he is special and in someone’s heart. 

When I was a child my best friend Kendra’s parents owned a large country floral business with huge greenhouses and acres of gardens to harvest fresh cut flowers. I will always hold dear in my heart the smell of air under glass, supercharged with oxygen and moisture. On busy holidays the two of us would cut flowers, wrap their stems in green sticky tape, and learn how to fashion corsages and bouquets.  Bits and pieces of leaves, stems and pedals would fall to the floor where our feet would crush their cells and the scent of fresh vegetation would  waft up to us as we busily worked at benches.

I believe there is still much magic in a gift of flowers.  There is nothing more beautiful - an exotic than how mature displays the call to fertilization and reproduction within colorful petals, pistols and stamens.
