North Coast Winds - Robin Joy Wellman - March 2017

Wait! March ALREADY! Springtime! Really! I was ready for the New Year which seemed like yesterday and feel equally ready for spring, for warmth, and for our flower display on our coast to begin. I am already seeing the Douglas Iris’ purpleness in our coastal fields along with a few other prairie displays. While I love walking in the rain with friends exploring new areas as well as familiar ones, I also enjoy a nice warm day with sunshine on my face. Please share with me some of your favorite hikes or walks. Friday, March 3 is World Wildlife Day which seems like the perfect day for a little exploration to take in some wildlife sightings. Salt Point has many exceptional hiking trails along our bluffs, or the forests with many full seasonal creek flows, as well as the hikes into the ridge prairies with sag ponds that are full with the recent rains. Pick up a map at the Ranger office, or at one of the camp hosts to get familiar with the surroundings. What is your favorite coastal wildlife?

If you aren’t up for a walk the Gualala Art Center has a few events to choose from with several art openings including “Arts in the Schools – Young Creative Minds” with students from many of our local schools. The reception is Friday, March 10th from 5:00 to 7:00. Come out and support our local and young talent and then stay for an evening performance “Divining Triptychs: Printmaking, Dance, and Poetry Across Millennia”. This performance is hosted by Local Eyes group. For this and other events at our wonderful art center please visit their web page at gualalaarts.org/category/events/. Our local bookstore extraordinaire, ‘Four Eyed Frog,’ has a speaker scheduled on Saturday March 4th at 4:00. Susanna Janssen will share her new book Woodstruck! – The Fun and Fascination of Language. Please visit their web for more info: foureyedfrog.com/.  Heading up the coast to Point Arena it is always, truly always, a beautiful visit to the Lighthouse. Don’t forget the wharf area in Point Arena with fun shops and some of the best chowder and beer menu on the coast.

March is Women’s History Month. Who in history is your hero! Think of someone local. March 8th is International Women’s Day so we can think local and global the many amazing women that surround us in our history. Hug the women in your life, send them a little private message, or create a poem since March 21 is World Poetry Day. And don’t forget we will have Daylight Savings on March 12th which I am pretty sure we all welcome. And yes, of course – St. Patrick’s Day which seems to be another reason to celebrate. Do you know the reason for this Saint to be celebrated? Anyone needing some luck to come their way…me…please! Well while we are looking for luck, looking ahead at the longer days, and looking forward to more warmth I want to believe that all our futures are ‘brighter than the sun’ (like the smile on one sweet face I know). Stay positive and remember to hold each other up.
