Rotary: 100 Years of Life and Service

In honor of the 100th Anniversary of The Rotary Foundation, clubs have been asked to identify someone in their community who is 100 and deserves to be recognized for outstanding service to the community and the world. Sebastopol Sunrise Rotary found the process exhilarating and the selection of a recipient not difficult.

In 1916, a young man was born in Sebastopol on Bollinger Lane, named for his family. He grew up on his parent’s apple ranch and remembers the small town life that was a reality 100 years ago. Fred Bollinger recalls walking barefoot one day to Twin Hills School – and being sent home by his teacher to get his shoes!  After school frequently found him fishing for – and catching – trout in the Laguna. He graduated from Analy in 1935.

As a sergeant in World War II, Fred was a radio operator in the army, assigned near the command car at the end of the line of troops. When needed, he would be ordered to fly reconnaissance since he was the lightest person in the troop. He fought in Europe, his brother in the Pacific. Coincidentally they were returned to the exact same place on the exact same day. Fred’s WWII uniform still fits and he wears it often, particularly in Veteran’s parades in Petaluma. When he isn’t participating as a Native Son of the Golden West, or enjoying home-cooked meals from his doting nieces, Fred admits to being an avid gopher trapper at Luther Burbank Experimental Farm.

To help celebrate this significant year, The Rotary Club of Sebastopol Sunrise, has selected Fred Bollinger to be named a Paul Harris Fellow (after Rotary’s founder) in honor of his 100 years and his outstanding service to his community and his country. The ceremony will take place at the Club’s regular breakfast meeting, Wednesday morning, the 18th at the Masonic Hall in downtown Sebastopol.

Odds are there will be more than a few moist eyes in the house!

The Sebastopol sunrise Rotary Club is an organization of approximately 60 business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and works to build goodwill in the community. It is one of two Rotary Clubs in Sebastopol.
