Film and Theater Review - January 2017

Happy New Year Sonoma County! The Golden Globe nominations came out and this month is a perfect chance to catch up on the nominated films you were too busy to see last month. If you only see one, “La La Land” is the one. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone deserve to win all the awards they are nominated for. Another film to see is “Jackie” starring Natalie Portman. Her performance is haunting. I agree with all of you that emailed me that “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is very disappointing and confusing. For those of you that haven’t seen it yet, I suggest wait for DVD.

Janelle Monáe, Taraji P. Henson and Octavia Spencer in “Hidden Figures.”Movies opening this month are “Hidden Figures” starring Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer. Spencer received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress for this film. It opens wide January 6th. Also opening January 6th is “A Monster Calls” starring Sigourney Weaver and Liam Neeson. Mark Wahlberg fans will be happy he has a new movie opening January 13th. It’s called “Patriots Day” which also stars one of my favorite actors, John Goodman. Ben Affleck has a new movie called “Live By Night” also opening that day. Where has Jamie Foxx been? He’s back in his new movie “Sleepless”. Also back is Vin Diesel in “XXX: The Return of Xander Cage”. It also stars Samuel L. Jackson. It opens January 20th. Matthew McConaughey’s movie “Gold” opens wide January 27th.

For my theater goers, the Curran Theater reopens this month with the anticipated “Fun Home”. Hailed as Broadway’s most original new musical in years, the winner of five Tony Awards is an emotionally charged and poignant family drama. “Fun Home” first played Off-Broadway at The Public Theater in 2013, before transferring to Broadway’s Circle in the Square Theater. It won Best Musical that year. It opens at the Curran in San Francisco January 25 and closes February 19. The theater is located at 445 Geary Street, San Francisco Ca 94102. Go online for ticket information. 6th Street Playhouse in Santa Rosa opens “Stage Kiss”, directed by the talented Marty Pistone, on January 13 and closes February 5. When two actors with an amorous history  are thrown together as romantic leads in a forgotten 1930s melodrama, they quickly lose touch with reality. I’m very excited to see this production! 6th Street is located at 52 W. 6th Street Santa Rosa Ca 95401. Call them at 707 523 4185 for more information.

Denzel Washington, Viola Davis in “Fences”Back to the Golden Globe nominations. This year there were 6 nominations for actors of color. Octavia Spencer “Hidden Figures”, Denzel Washington “Fences”, Viola Davis “Fences”, Mahershala Ali “Moonlight”, Naomie Harris “Moonlight” and Ruth Negga “Loving”. Hopefully the Academy Awards will follow suit this year and not repeat what they did last year where there wasn’t one nomination to a diverse actor.
