Bayer Neighborhood Park & Gardens ready for Roseland

The City of Santa Rosa will open the brand new Bayer Neighborhood Park and Gardens located at 1550 West Avenue in Roseland on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 after 9am.

The 5.8-acre park features an array of amenities including a community pavilion, kiosk, skate park, half-court basketball, volleyball court, adult exercise equipment, barbecues, three types of ethnic outdoor cooking ovens, picnic tables, large farm-themed playground structure, nature discovery area, community gardens with farm stand, grassy open areas and a commercial kitchen facility. The commercial kitchen will be available for rentals at a date to be determined.

Public art will also be incorporated into the new park, and Artist Mario Uribe has been commissioned through a competitive call for artists by the Arts in Public Places Committee to create and install a mural on three sides of the community pavilion. Uribe will be working in conjunction with artist Daniel Doughty on the mural titled Harmony, and the mural will feature iconic views of Bayer Farm on the east and west walls. The walls are connected by twelve circles decorated with traditional folk art from cultures represented in Bayer Farm and the surrounding neighborhoods.

The artists will be inviting the community to participate in painting the mural at Bayer Park through a paint by numbers activity over the next couple weeks. The first date to participate in the mural painting is on Thursday, December 22, 2016, and members of the public are invited to drop by the park that day between 10am and 2pm to participate. Additional dates for the community to participate in the mural painting will be announced soon.

The park property was acquired in 2007, and the concept for Bayer Neighborhood Park & Gardens was created through a series of community meetings held in 2009. The Master Plan was further amended by City Council in 2013. The park was designed by Royston Hanamoto Alley & Abey (RHAA) of Mill Valley, California. Deide Construction of Lodi, California constructed the park. The total cost to acquire land, design and construct the park will be $13.3 million.

“Bayer Neighborhood Park & Gardens is a product of community vision and the Recreation & Parks Department is thrilled to announce it’s opening,” said Recreation & Parks Director Nanette Smejkal.  “This park provides a special place for adults and youth to participate in active play, gardening and socializing. Outdoor recreation space is valued and needed in Roseland and the park will be a treasured location for families and friends to gather for generations.”

The park will be open daily sunrise to sunset. A special grand opening festival will take place in 2017 to celebrate the park and recognize the contributions of numerous stakeholders, including the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation & Open Space District, which provided a grant for land acquisition, and the State of California which provided a grant for development.
