2017 CHI Summer Abroad Application Now Open

This past year CHI got back to its roots and launched its first-ever Summer Abroad program for Sonoma County high school students. Thanks to generous community support, CHI was able to offer scholarships ranging from $500 to $5,400 to nine local students from across the socio-economic spectrum, providing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The students traveled to Kenya for a five-week study-abroad trip, where they worked on projects at CHI Academy, took classes on topics including history of Kenya (including its colonial past), agriculture systems, health education, global humanitarian awareness & service, and Swahili, East Africa’s lingua franca. The students also traveled to a variety of cultural and humanitarian sites including Lake Naivasha in the Great Rift Valley, Kibera Slums, Menengai Crater, and of course a safari in Masai Mara National Reserve (part of the same world-famed ecosystem found in Tanzania’s adjacent Serengeti National Park).

Because of such overwhelming support and the remarkable first-year success of CHI Summer Abroad, applications for the 2017 program are now open. CHI will be accepting applications from ALL current Sonoma County high school students through January 27, 2017. CHI will offer both merit-based and financial need-based scholarships to qualified applicants.

In addition to seeing much more of life in this developing nation than the typical safari tourist experiences (although the stay in Kenya will again include time observing wildlife in all its richness), program participants will interact closely with CHI Academy’s Kenyan students whose enthusiasm for education may prove to be a revelation to their Sonoma County counterparts.

The program includes:

• A five-week study abroad trip to CHI Academy in Kenya that includes daily classes in Kenyan history, agriculture, society, Swahili (Kenya’s most widely spoken language), global humanitarian awareness and service

• The opportunity to work alongside CHI Academy teachers helping instruct the Academy’s Kenyan pupils in math, English, history, science and other subjects

• The opportunity to work on school projects including helping build new classrooms, improving the school garden, expanding the play area, and much more

• Cost without scholarship: $5,400 – includes airfare, accommodations, meals, excursions (including a safari), and more

• Scholarship and/or fundraising support offered

• Dates: June 27 – July 31, 2017 (dates subject to change +/- 2 days)

• Notable excursions: Lake Naivasha, Mt. Longonot, Maasai Mara National Game Reserve, Mt. Kenya, and The Great Rift Valley.
