Film and Theater Review - November 2016

The Napa Valley Film Festival opens November 9th with “Lion” starring Nicole Kidman, Rooney Mara and Dev Patel. There will be a party after the screening. Fans of Dev Patel will be happy to know he will be there. On November 11th, “Sticky Notes” will premiere starring Ray Liotta and Rose Leslie. There will be a Q and A with the director and star Rose Leslie. Also premiering November 11th is “Bleed For This” starring Miles Teller, Aaron Eckhart and Katey Sagal. Aaron Eckhart and the director will be at the Q and A. Go to the Napa Valley Film Festival website to buy tickets and for information on other films.

November is a busy month for movies to go see at a theater near you. Here are the ten you have to see at the theater. Do not wait to see these at home. First is “Doctor Strange” opening November 4th. It stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Rachel McAdams. Also opening November 4th is “Loving”. Go online to see what this movie is about. It will do very well come Oscar time. Opening November 11th is “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” starring Kristen Stewart and Vin Diesel. It will also generate many Oscar nominations. “Harry Potter” fans will be happy to know that “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”, which is a prequel to the “Harry Potter” movies, is premieringNovember 18th. It stars Eddie Redmayne, who recently won Best Actor at the Oscars. Also opening November 18th is “Bleed For This” starring Miles Teller and Katey Sagal. You can see this at the Napa Film Festival before it opens on November 11th. “Manchester By the Sea” starring Casey Affleck also opens November 18th. Affleck might win his first Oscar for his starring role in this film. Opening November 23rd is “Bad Santa 2”. By now you know I don’t get excited about sequels but the first “Bad Santa” was so good I am excited about this one. Billy Bob Thornton is back as Bad Santa. The new Disney animated film “Moana” looks amazing. Dwayne

“The Rock” Johnson stars in this movie. It’s been a long time since Warren Beatty has starred in a film. The wait is over with “Rules Don’t Apply” which also opens November 23rd. Brad Pitt stars in “Allied” with Marion Cotillard. This is the movie that supposedly destroyed Pitt’s marriage with Angelina Jolie. It also opens November 23rd. I have received many emails from moviegoers in Sebastopol complaining about the seats in the Rialto Theater. Go to Summerfield in Santa Rosa where the seats are comfortable. It’s only 15 minutes out of your way.

For my live theater fans, there are two shows opening in November that you will want to see. First is “Peter and the Star Catcher” at the Spreckels Theater in Rohnert Park. Directed by the very talented David Yen. The show runs from November 25th through December 18th. Call 707 588-3400 for more information. Fans of The show “The Lion King” will be happy to know it’s returning to the SHN Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco.  The show runs from November 2nd through December 31st.  Visit the Orpheum website for more information.

The best new show this season is “Pitch” on FOX Thursday nights. It stars Kylie Bunbury and Mark Consuelos. The worst new show is “Man With a Plan” starring Matt LeBlanc. It has to be the worst witten show on network television. Email me your favorite new shows to dongibblecast@hotmail.com and I hope to see you at the Napa Valley Film Festival!
