Guerneville Groove - August 2016

by Beth Rudometkin

Amazing August! Where did the time go? Hard to believe we are on the home stretch of the summer season; must be because there are so many groovy, community happenings in our area, keeping us busy! We are so blessed to have our beautiful Russian River to center our lives around. But Mother Nature cannot keep it clean on her own, so please help the Russian Riverkeeper protect the watershed! There will be two watershed cleanups in September, but they need your help NOW. Help them reach their goal of getting 750 volunteers to remove 50,000 pounds of garbage from our Russian River. You can help by sponsoring and/or recruiting a volunteer team! Contact me at Community First Credit Union (corner of Main Street and Armstrong Woods Rd) for sponsorship forms and more information; your sponsorship will fund everything from disposal and hazardous waste fees, to gloves, bags, safety training, advertising, participant snacks, beverages and the annual volunteer T Shirt! Please help us to remove more garbage from the entire Russian River than has ever been removed before!

Wednesday, August 3rd, the Russian River Chamber of Commerce will be having its monthly mixer, hosted by Johnson’s Beach from 6-8pm. Come on out and meet your local business owners and hear what is happening in our groovy town. That same week is Bear Week, so town will be busy and full of Lazy Bears! Friday, August 5th is the First Friday Artwalk. There are groovy new directories available at most business locations, including a map of the galleries showcasing your local artists.

Don’t forget about the Farmer’s Market in its new location every Thursday, behind Hubert’s Hall, in the field located on 4th Street! We have enjoyed a bountiful summer, full of fresh fruits, vegetables and fish this season, so be sure to get there early for the best pickin’s. Every other Thursday is the groovy Rockin’ the River Concert Series located on the Guerneville Plaza. August 4th come on down to enjoy Moonalice, a crowd-pleasing psychedelic, roots-rock band, beginning at 6:30 pm. August 18th will be a groovy tribute to Santana by Caravanserai! Speaking of concerts, don’t forget about the KGGV Summer Concerts every Sunday at the Community Church Backyard Stage, located at 14520 Armstrong Woods Rd from 4-6pm! This month’s performers include The Larkdales (Bluegrass) on August 7th, Nick Otis & Matt Silva (duo) and Blues Defenders (Blues Band) on August 14th, Frankye Kelly (Jazz) w/Rob Ellis & Carol Shumate on August 21st and Dan & Sarah Bates Pocket Canyon Ramblers on August 28th.

Of course we cannot go a month without our groovy Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence! The Russian River Sisters will be presenting Orange is the new BINGO on Saturday, August 13th at the Vets Hall; tickets sell out fast so get them online at rrsisters.org. This month the beneficiary is the Russian River Sisters’ Operating Fund and Programs. Bless them for all they donate to our community! While we are on the subject of donations, be sure to support the Russian River Health Center by going to their website, wchealth.org. to make a donation to help rebuild the Health Center which burned last December and to also ensure patients continue to have access to care! They have been working ever so hard to continue the delivery of excellent care and services throughout the West County and need your support! You can also check out their updates and local happenings on their site as well.

I want to tell you about a groovy happening in our neighboring community of Monte Rio. On August 27th is the 18th Annual Russian River Car Show at the Community Center across from the Rio Theater. This is made possible by the Friends of Monte Rio and if you haven’t attended before, you MUST go! They have the best pancake breakfast and you must check out their groovy pancake grill! Lots of family fun, raffle prizes, booths and of course the grooviest cars in Northern California!

Enjoy the rest of your summer, and keep on groovin’!
