Ron Emanuel: Dec. 16, 1946 - July 16, 2016

The Russian River coffee shop crowd lost one of its most popular denizens when Ron Emanuel died from a massive stroke July 16 in Olympia, WA.

A long time River resident, Ron enjoyed spending time with friends, both old and new, at places like Coffee Bazaar and Spliff’s (later Kaya’s).

“He was truly interested in everyone and their story,” Emma said. “He was open to everyone and loved to talk with them.”

Coffee Bazaar was also the place where Ron exhibited a collection of his nature photography, and performed his one-time-only stand up comedy routine.

He was well known on the River for his art photography, and for his, often, corny jokes. In fact Emma found a notebook in his apartment with a bunch of new jokes he was creating in the months before his death.

Ron moved to Rio Nido in 1979, after several years in Oakland, where he was an active participant in the anti-war and feminist movements. He volunteered with the Oakland Free Clinic, a crisis hotline, and a domestic violence shelter.

“He liked to help people however he could,” Emma said.

Ron spent the last day of his life surrounded by his daughter, his beloved sister Lynn Emanuel, his former partner Lois Pearlman, and some of the new friends he had made in Olympia.
