Dec 31 ~ The “Happy New Year, Charlie Brown!” celebration, running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., includes hands-on crafts for children, balloon drops at noon and root beer toasts at noon and 3 p.m. Charles M. Schulz Museum, 2301 Hardies Lane, Santa Rosa. $5-$12. 579-4452, schulzmuseum.org.

Dec 30 -Nearly New Year’s Winter Ball: LGBTQI Dance - Join us at the Sebastopol Area Senior Center on Friday, Dec. 30, from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. to dance and ring in the New Year, with the Nearly New Year’s Winter Ball: LGBTQI and Friends Dance. The year 2016 was a tough one and we’re sure everyone will be happy to put it in the rearview mirror. We will toast and preempt the big ball drop in New York the following day. DJ Dave Brown will provide the music; snacks provided.Our dances are all-inclusive and are meant to be enjoyed by the entire community, regardless of age, gender, or sexual orientation. The cost is $10, and there will be a modest charge for wine. Proceeds benefit the senior center. No dogs please. This year is no exception with the R&B Dance Band, Soul Fuse, headlining the evening. Love Choir with Mr. Music opens the show followed by the Americana sounds of The Rhythm Rangers with Kevin Russell. The Peacetown All-Stars then take the stage featuring: Levi Lloyd, Sarah Baker, Buzzy Martin, Frank Hayhurst and more. The typical midnight ceremony in Peacetown is a silent Peace Prayer and Ceremony directed by Francis Rico, that brings the community together in unity, peace and joy. The event is expected to sell out early.

January 1, 2017 - Stewarts of the Coast and Redwoods & California State Parks Present: New Year's Day Family Hikes. First Hikes of the year in YOUR parks! Ring in the New Year Outside! Hikes led by experienced docents. Dress for cold weather. Canceled if heavy rain.

Fort Ross State Historic Park - 10:00am-1:30pm Meeting Location: Reef Campground Trailhead (roadside), Fort Ross State Historic Park - Degree of Difficulty: moderate - Minimum Age for Children: 8 - Restrictions: Sorry, no pets permitted. Length of Hike: One-way with carpool return (2 ½ miles); shorter (to FortRoss) option (1 mile) or round-trip (5 miles)

Things to bring: Water, bag lunch, binoculars, cameras, hat, sunscreen,
layered clothing, optional hiking sticks and hiking boots (be prepared for
some possible moisture).

Additional information for participants: Experience our coastal bluffs,
redwood forest, pinnipeds and sandy beaches as we hike our coastal trail
through Fort Ross State Historic Park from south to north. One-way,
round-trip or shorter hike options. After hike optional 2pm interpretive
talk at Fort Ross.

Festive Events

Thru Jan 8 ~ City of Ukiah Ice Skating - Thanks to the Ukiah Valley Medical Center (UVMC) and the City of Ukiah. UVMC constructed the rink in celebration of its 60th anniversary.  Free skating will be offered on December 5 and 6, 3–8 p.m.  After December 6, unlimited skating is $10. The rink is situated next to the Alex R. Thomas Plaza on School Street. During December 7–22, hours will be as follows: Monday–Friday, 3–8 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.–8 p.m.; Sunday, noon–5 p.m. During December 23–January 8, the rink will be open noon–7 p.m. except on December 24, 25, 31, and January 1, when it will be open noon–4 p.m.For more information, see cityofukiah.com/ukiah-on-ice
