Santa Rosa Snippets - July 2013

by Jo Anne Cohn

Have you heard what’s new in sunny Santa Rosa?  It’s the West End Farmers Market and it’s awesome!  The market has all sorts of goodies – fresh produce, baked goods and lots of locally made crafts.

I’m not sure how to describe it but if you haven’t visited the Market, you really are missing out.  It’s not “just” a farmers market.  It’s a farmers market with personality.  When I say personality, I mean it.  Where else could you find a peep diorama of a farmers market?  I have to admit that I didn’t even know what a peep diorama was before I went to the West End Farmers Market.  But now I do.  Just think of those cute little marshmallow bunnies and chicks complete with homemade costumes with props!  Who knew that there are even international peep competitions?

I like the West End Farmers Market because it is all about community.  It’s a great place to spend a family friendly Sunday morning – hanging out with neighbors, buying local produce and finding the perfect birthday gift for your favorite friend.

Hats off to the West End Neighborhood Association for bringing a farmers market to our community!  What a great way to build a strong neighborhood and support our local economy.

Please check out what else the West End Neighborhood Association is doing at srwestend.com.  Maybe you’ll be inspired to organize a poodle party, bocce ball competition or a movie night in your neighborhood.  Stop by the West End Farmers Market on Sunday mornings now through October and enjoy the treasures that the West End has to offer.

Knitting is the bombSanta Rosa Snippets - July 2013 - Yarn Bomb

Been downtown Santa Rosa lately?  Have you seen all the cute tree cozies?  If so, thank the dozens of yarn bombers who made Courthouse Square come alive with wonderful yarn art in support of International Yarn Bomb Day.

Tree cozies of all sizes and colors adorn Courthouse Square. I met Signe Villemaire who not only knits very cool tree cozies, she knits lots (and lots!) of teddy bears for children who have been affected by AIDS in Africa. (www.motherbearproject.org

You don’t have to be an expert knitter to become a yarn bomber.  In fact, if you haven’t ever tried knitting, now is the time. Knitting a tree cozy is just like knitting a scarf – very easy! Just contact the Captain of the Bomb Squad, Judy Kennedy, at quinkenn@sonic.net to find out how to participate in next year’s event. This is a great way to meet people and build community! I’m all in.  How about you?

Who’s your nominee for a Merit Award?

Making Santa Rosa a great place to live can’t happen without all of us. Each year, the Santa Rosa City Council presents a Merit Award to organizations, individuals and businesses who have volunteered their time and energies to serve the community and improve the quality of life in Santa Rosa.

Do you know an organization, business or person who gives back to our City?  If so, please be sure to submit their nomination for consideration for the 2013 Merit Awards. The deadline for nominations for the 2013 season is August 1, 2013. Just go to the City of Santa Rosa’s website (ci.santa-rosa.ca.us) for more information.
