Rain, Rain and more Rain:

Well, I’m surprised we haven’t had to summons Noah’s Ark. Mother Nature has shown us a thing or two. Many of us here have had to deal with the harsh reality of natural springs popping up on our properties and flash flooding running down Canyon 6 and Sequoia Street.

January Weather
Goodness have we be deluged with some crazy weather this month. I believe this has been the wildest January we have endured in a very long time. The rains have been heavy and non stop, the winds a bit on the scary side in RN and massive flash flooding all around the canyons.

December Chill

Whoa! The cold weather here in Rio Nido has been the topic of conversation at the RN Post office. Locals are bundled up and trying to stay warm and dry. We have had quite a bit of rain this month as our river is nice and full.

October Chill

Fall came quickly with winter on its heals here in RN. The cold in the air is apparent and many of us are already turning on our heaters, pellet stoves and woodburning fireplaces. Hard to believe Thanksgiving is a mere few weeks away with the holiday season approaching ever so quickly. Yikes, I don’t know if I’m ready just yet.

Fall/Harvest Season:

October has arrived. The morning chill in the air, the change to burnt oranges, reds and vibrant yellows adorns our trees and vineyards and a myriad of gourds and pumpkins brighten and warm our northern California landscape.

A beautiful summer

Time sure flies super fast when summer is upon our tiny magical hamlet here in Rio Nido. It has been in my opinion one of the best summer’s here so far. Why, you may ask? Well, for starters there is just an overall feeling of happiness in the air.

This summer is turning out to be very eventful. Throngs of summer revelers are descending upon Rio Nido. I can’t say that I blame them. With the warm weather, close proximity to the ocean, beach, wineries and restaurants it’s a given.

I’m Back...

Spring has sprung. Can you believe it? I took a month long hiatus from writing this column as I do every year for the past six years to get my creative juices flowing again. Rio Nido is a unique and wonderful place to live with a constant flow of interesting goings on and colorful characters who make up this picturesque little hamlet. I wanted to thank all the readers of this column out there for your concern. I just took April off and will continue to write this column until I take my journey and move to the village of Lucignano (Arezzo) in Tuscany to start another exciting chapter in my life. Thank you for all your emails, texts and FB messages. Really makes a girl feel loved. Until then you can rest assured to see the Rio Nido Magic column every month.

A Trip Down Memory Lane:

Clare and Carla Harris, long time River residents invited historian John Schubert and Sarah along with the Friends of Rio Nido Board/members over for a special dinner recently. The second of two such dinners. Invitees were: John Uniack, Marsee Henon, Adam Flaherty, Kim Holliday, Nate and Ingrid Emming, Larry Tocmakidis and Elena Chronis. Clare and Carla have many, many old historical photographs, maps and memorabilia from the early 1900's. All of us were in awe of the photos of old homes, trains, the beaches and big bands. It was such a treat to be able to hear about all the interesting goings on in Rio Nido back in the day and the Russian River area. A big thank you for a beautiful evening spent with new friends and old friends! See you soon.

Love is in the air

February is the “Love” month. I just love this time of year. The stores are full of hearts and merchandise displayed in the stores is in varying shades of red. A cheerful color. Valentine’s Day has always been a special day for me since I was a small child in grade school.

So, how was everyone’s Christmas? The malls didn’t seem as crowded this year thanks to on-line ordering. And I think many of us are baking and making homemade gifts that have so much more meaning. I think buying gifts and running amok in a mall doesn’t sound very appealing to many of us. As we become adults, I believe the needless gift giving becomes more of a chore rather than a fun thing to do. I can sympathize if you have small children. When I was little it was all about Xmas morning and waiting to see what gifts Santa brought me or the Benjamins from my aunts and uncles. I couldn’t stand getting clothes for Xmas. Every Xmas was so much fun. The anticipation alone made me excited and happy. Sleeping on Xmas eve, forget it. I was too wound up to get a wink of sleep. Unfortunately, Santa was someone I longed to meet and believed in. But, that was crushed by my older brother who pointed out that it is a mere fairy tale. Darn. In any case, I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday.

National Night Out

Tuesday, August 4th was National Night Out all over the country. The premise of this yearly gathering is to get the community together over a span of 2-3 hours to discuss what is happening in their backyard so to say. The turnout this year was impressive to say the least.

It’s hard to believe that school starts in a matter of 2-3 weeks. Back-to-school sales are being advertised every day. Summer just doesn’t seem to be as long as it used to be when I was growing up. This year the official day of Summer began on June 21st. With the various ski weeks and holiday weeks on the school calendars these days it appears that summer vacation has been shortened quite a bit. For those of us who have been fortunate to spend summer on the River, summer seems to last all the way to September. We are lucky to be graced by so called “Indian Summers”, when the weather is very warm. Sort of the last hoorah before we slide into the Fall season. The official start of fall being Wednesday, Sept. 21st.
