Wait! March ALREADY! Springtime! Really! I was ready for the New Year which seemed like yesterday and feel equally ready for spring, for warmth, and for our flower display on our coast to begin. I am already seeing the Douglas Iris’ purpleness in our coastal fields along with a few other prairie displays.

I am pretty sure each of you uses the word ‘heart’ every day in your conversations or thoughts. For example; you might think about your heartbeat,  you have a heart and show kindness, you decide on doing something heartfelt,  you have a heartache and/or heartbreak, you ate too much and have heart burn, there is a real heart throb in town, heart warmers, you are a carpenter and talk about heartwood, you enjoyed a hearty meal.

This is your ‘slow down’ reminder. Slow down your mornings – wake up 30 minutes earlier to enjoy the quiet alone time (or if you are so lucky sleep an extra 30 minutes); slow down the day – pull over and take in the beautiful views of our coast and hillsides; slow down the week...

Being thankful all the time is near impossible. Having gratitude when we have daily struggles can be shaken. So much can get thrown at us from all parts of our very full lives. If you listen to the music through the ages, or notice the writings from the most notable poets, or philosophers discussing the idea of happiness, or if you read the little sayings that pass through our Facebook page we know the focus throughout the year of finding peace and acceptance is the life message.

It’s the little things. The littlest tiniest things! Miracles of this world we live in. You know the old saying “stop and smell the roses”? Well let’s take it a little deeper – in the rose. Next time you pass a rose – look inside – look at the details of the petal – do you see the flight lines for the hummingbirds and the bees? It reminds us of how we are truly looking at miracles every day.

Lock your cars! The ever abundant plum trees in our neighborhood are out of control this year and you can’t give these good, ripe, juicy, and organic plums away. Well, except for a few places. I can’t see them going to waste – not one plum – so I contacted Redwood Gospel Missionin Santa Rosa and they will graciously take them.

Oh Happy Day! Staycation coming my way! I am not sure I love this word but I love the idea of being at home and/or close to home for my vacation time. Working in the garden, washing windows (truly not my favorite but needs to be done), sprucing up the outside, deep cleaning the inside and oh yeah – a good book.

I want to remind everyone that May 1st is a day to surprise someone with flowers. This would be an unexpected someone – not someone you date or live with or related to. But someone you barely know and would like to do something sweet for.

As the coast starts to wake up from the winter slowdown the welcome spirit around you is everywhere. Look up and the trees are saying thank you for the winds and rain, look around and the flowers are offering us a happy smile, the shore is alive, the birds are singing. And what could be better than a great cup of tea or coffee at Café Aquatica sitting in their river/ocean view chairs sharing the glory of this beautiful world we live in? I have the opportunity to speak with people around the world who travel and visit many places, and over and over I hear about this coast being one of the most beautiful. I agree! I want to encourage all of you to jump into a kayak from one of the two vendors in Jenner, or in Gualala and enjoy the river views (not when the river is raging after storms). Or take a walk along the beaches (please don’t chase the waves). Or visit our many parks along the north Sonoma Coast and Southern Mendocino Coasts.

Aaahh! Spring is at right at our finger tips. The feel of warmth on winter worn bodies, the longer daylight for that extra-long walk, and the urge to be outside in our gardens putting our fingers in the soil (pulling the ‘forever’ weeds) gives us all faith that yet another earth cycle is before us. Like you, I can’t wait to get my new flower seeds that are now sprouting inside into the nourishing soil in the yard (March 12 is Plant a Flower Day). But lessons learned long ago;  be patient and resist the urge to plant outside for yet another month or so unless you have a protected space. We can still get those late frosts and heavy storms in March. However you might recall that Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow – therefore we will have an early spring.  So get ready! And if you find yourself ahead of the garden game than take that extra-long walk to enjoy those early wildflowers. The redwood sorrel is in full bloom creating the brightest of yellow fields, iris’ are showing their true colors, star zigadene ( I love saying that word) has been spotted standing up tall, California Blue eyed grass dots the meadow, and ‘footsteps of spring’ are abundant with new growth (Rose my dog is never happy about).

One of my favorite moments in the day is when I am out walking with the sweetest dog in the world,Rose. I also believe it is one of Rose’s favorite times of the day too! We explore new trails in our parklands on and off the beaten path. Most of us all know this, but being in nature taking in the natural surroundings changes your mood and your entire day leaving you feeling restored with improved outlook and mental performance. Of course three days is great, but even 15 minutes is good. Green space is all around us. Taking in the ocean, the redwoods, the meadows, the wildflowers, the whale spouts, and the littlest of creatures in the tide pools is a gift. How about camping in one of our local campgrounds for a short adventure! I used to take my boys camping at the Anchor Bay Campgroundfor an overnight. It meant everything to us. The Nature Conservancy surveys found only 10 percent of American teens spend time outside every day. Our community might have better stats but I don’t often see our local teens out and about on the trails. Friends, it pays off in so many ways to get your family and pets outside. See you out on the trails.

I love the New Year. It’s a start date for new beginnings of new ideas. It allows for us to bring in those personal changes to our health, our personal life, and our daily patterns. Personal is the key word. It is about you! It is also time to clean out the clutter, clean out the negative, and bring in the good around you so you can shine.

I love Christmas and the holiday bustle that surround this time of year. I love wishing people happy holidays and do so by saying Merry Christmas. I generally don’t say Happy Hanukah or the other holiday greetings as I am not as familiar with other religions. I am Jesus centered and therefore this is what I say however I appreciate and welcome all greetings from everyone. Happy Holidays and Good Cheer!

It’s natural to start thinking about offering gratitude to those around us as we move into November and Thanksgiving.  And it’s even more natural to want to share that gratitude with those you live with. A small note under a pillow, a hand-picked bouquet of flowers, or just a special moment as you speak of the little things they do for you. Don’t forget those you work with, your teachers, coaches, the delivery guys, the gardeners, the mechanics, and all those who help to create the life we live in. Again, a hand written note of thanks for those little tasks they do or a little something something goes a long long way! And please don’t forget your sweet animals that adore you each and every day no matter what! Now that is Gratitude!
